National Guard troops, Customs and Border Patrol cruisers, and DEA agents could all be seen patrolling the quiet streets of Washington DC Thursday night.

News2Share spoke with two employees of DC dive bar "The Pug" about the effect of the federal troops and patrols by agents on their business on H Street.

"The whole street is dead," Jesse Alexander tells me. "It's a difference of night and day."

Customers "don't want to deal with it, even if they're not getting arrested, they're afraid of the presence."

"It has affected business in a way that people don't feel comfortable coming out," says fellow bartender William Thomas. "They don't feel like they can come out of their homes without hassle."

"It has just slowed everything down."

"Free DC! Free DC!" Protesters and union members assembled for a labor-centered rally against the federal takeover of law enforcement in Washington DC on Thursday at Dupont Circle.

"End military occupation! D.C. Statehood Now" read a banner. Nearby, National Guard troops armed with rifles stood watch.

"Here in DC, we need to fight back, right now, the same way that labor unions do all the time, by refusing to cooperate with a system that is abusing us until the people who have the power meet our demands," said "Free DC" co-founder Keya Chatterjee.

"We demand the escalated federal forces leave DC immediately!" she explained. "We demand ICE get out of our communities!"

"We demand that federal workers get their jobs back! We demand power over our own budget, laws, and justice system here in DC!"

"We demand that DC is admitted as the 51st state!"

"When the people are occupied, resistance is justified!"

Hundreds of activists at union members marched against President Trump, chanting "Unions, not hate make America great!"

"Who runs this city? We run this city!"

Federal agents, many wearing masks, oversaw a vehicle checkpoint in the Ivy City neighborhood of Washington DC, part of President Trump's federal takeover of law enforcement functions in the capital city.

Drivers were directed to either carry on or move into one of two lanes where they'd be detained. Several were issues citations for infractions like window tint, while at least four were handcuffed, of which at least three were taken away by police.

Washington DC's MPD officers performed most of the frontline enforcement, while the feds oversaw the operation, assisted, and communicated by phone.

"Unconstitutional, go f*** yourselves," a driver yelled after being allowed through the checkpoint without being pulled over.

"Get him, he's on his phone!" fruitlessly yelled an MPD officer in response.

An unmarked vehicle was pulled into the line for those detained for further investigation.

When it turned out there was a uniformed police officer in the car, he was promptly let through.

Some other drivers were removed from their cars and put in handcuffs. The reasons for most arrests were not immediately clear to onlookers.

One motorcyclist was arrested at the conclusion of a field sobriety test.

"Please let me see you do it!" he asked officers after having to stand on one foot.

"What the f*** are you doing?" a man yelled at federal agents and police officers as the checkpoint concluded. "Quit your jobs! This isn't helping anyone!"

"You're going to hell, all of you!" he added, before an apparent supporter of the checkpoint quizzed him: "How do you know they're going to hell?... Make sure you know who goes to hell, when you say they're going to hell."

"They're kidnapping our neighbors off the street!" the man replied.

National Guardsmen patrolling Washington DC on President Trump's orders to prevent crime have now been issued fi****ms.

A handful of West Virginia Guardsmen patrolling the National Mall with rifles say "it's been a good time" and "a lot of photos."

One says there's been "way more positive than negative" interactions with the public.

"Probably like two out of ten people have probably been negative."

"Mainly a lot of 'thank you for your service,' stuff like that," another added. "We'll take what we can get."

The National Guards' armed patrols of Washington DC continue to largely be focused on WMATA train stations throughout the city.

While some soldiers were visible with rifles inside and outside the stations, most carried only SIG Sauer sidearms.

A man who described himself as a five year resident of DC praised the National Guard deployment, saying (from across the platform) "some of us really appreciate that they're protecting us."

When nearby soldiers were told that the man had praised them, one replied "I doubt it."

"Close OpenAI or we're all gonna die!" chanted protesters on Friday outside the San Francisco headquarters of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment company.

"Sam Altman, kill yourself, but not humanity!" one yelled, referring to the CEO.

One speaker with the Stop AI protest explained "the primary demand of Stop AI is to permanently ban artificial super-intelligence and artificial general intelligence because we will never have expirable evidence before building either that they will stay safe forever. So for that reason, we should never build them."

"The second demand of Stop AI is to put in place a citizens' assembly in the United States government to have democratic control over the development of narrow AI systems, AI systems that are not general purpose, that we cannot lose control of, but that can take the jobs of people that don't want their jobs to be taken by AI."

"We should put the democratic control of what AI is built into the hands of the people, and permanently ban artificial super-intelligence."

Police directed activists back to the sidewalk as they crossed into the street with signs reading 'AI WILL KILL US ALL" and "Stolen Data is not innovation."

Officer ultimately detained one person, issuing a single citation before the demonstration dispersed. The group plans to return to continue protesting next month.

Two weeks into President Trump's National Guard occupation of Washington DC to suppress crime, additional troops have arrived from nearby Republican states.

The soldiers have been most visible around Washington DC's Metropolitan Transit system, including George Washington University, McPherson Square, Metro Center, Gallery Place, L'Enfant Plaza, Waterfront, Navy Yard/Ballpark, and Union Station.

Editor's note: As myself and other press on Friday begin filming Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) federal police on U St in Washington DC amidst Trump's federal takeover of policing in the nation's Capitol, an officer asked me: “The places that we’re going, just give them privacy.”

I told him that “I’m never gonna not film something” on a public street [at the request of feds].

Throughout the week since Trump's Monday announcement, federal agents from HSI, FBI, DEA, ICE, and others have patrolled Washington DC, performing typically law enforcement functions.

For example, FBI and HSI federal agents were active in Columbia Heights region of Washington DC Saturday night, as captured by passerby Sam Harp, whose understanding is there was one person arrested. The reason for the arrest was not immediately clear. Officers left the scene just as media arrived.

A handful of protesters yelled at National Guardsmen outside Washington DC's Union Station and even attempted to physically block their vehicles from driving Saturday night.

“Free DC! You’re following orders from an insurrectionist!” shouted DC protester and former elected official Patricia Eugenio. “Do you really want to follow the orders of a white supremacist? Like, c’mon dude.”

Eugenio was physically pushed away by officers with the Metropolitan Police, which is currently under the command of President Trump under his initiative to federalize DC's policing.

A man holding a banner reading "TRUMP EPSTEIN PUTIN BFF" also blocked a line of heavy military vehicles for several minutes. He negotiated with an MPD officer who ultimately gave him a small water bottle in exchange for getting out of the road willingly.

Protesters continued to yell at National Guardsmen as they left Union Station for the night.
