It’s alivvvvvvve!!! (Sorry, impossible to resist.) The latest episode of The Book Light Podcast has dropped! It’s all about the genre-busting, form-shattering Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, which is celebrating its 200th birthday this year.

Listen to learn all about how “the creation myth of our time” came to be (and to feel smug the next time someone refers to the Monster as Frankenstein). You’ll also hear an amazing interview with the brilliant Dr. Giffen Maupin, who drops all kinds of knowledge about Romanticism and stitches and friendship. You can find the ep on our website (thebooklight.org) or subscribe and rate on iTunes. And if you listen, let us know what you think!

Here is a drawing of Cedar Hill, Frederick Douglass’ last home in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C., from when he lived there, and a picture from a visit last month. You’ll see the exterior of the house is nearly unchanged from Douglass’ time, and the interior is incredibly preserved as well. From this spot, Douglass could look down over the capital city that welcomed and excluded him, that he critiqued and implored to change. It’s a marvelous place to visit if you’re in D.C.—an embodiment of how much change Douglass and others created in his lifetime, and how much work there is left to do.

Who was the most photographed American of the nineteenth century? Frederick Douglass! Throughout his life, Douglass harnessed the power of his own image to challenge hierarchies of power and create change. Our next podcast episode covers this aspect of Douglass's remarkable life, and much more.

The abolitionist wanted to ensure a more accurate depiction of black Americans during the tumultuous years before the Civil War, Harvard's John Stauffer writes in Picturing Frederick Douglass.

Go behind the scenes of our first episode, on Edgar Allan Poe, by checking out our blog! You'll learn how to convince a 4-year-old to accompany you to the grave of a long-dead author (hint: fill him up with really good Vietnamese fusion food, from The Red Boat in Baltimore).
