In this episode of Emmy-nominated Capital Arts, Kat Thompson invites us into her studio to explore a work in progress: A layered, vivid piece that weaves together quilting techniques, Caribbean heritage, personal memory, and ancestral connection. Inspired by her mother’s stories of Jamaica and the symbolism of Southern quilts, Kat reclaims traditions that were once set aside and honors the creative power of those who came before her. Her process is intuitive and emotional, and she uses hand-sewn strip patterning, state quilt blocks, and traditional Jamaican textiles as tools for storytelling. Through these patterns and textures, Kat turns art into a conversation between past and present.

"She was the original ally!" 🏳️‍🌈 It started with a small gesture at Annie’s Paramount Steak House DC where a quiet moment turned into a powerful offer of support. Annie reminded a couple that they didn’t need to hide who they were, and that act of kindness spread fast. The message was clear: This is a place where everyone is welcome. Annie didn’t just serve food... she showed people they belong.

Big thanks to the awesome people at Annie's and (IG) for helping us tell this story.

Did you know that DC helped originate a style of homegrown music (besides go-go obvi)? Miles Spicer plays the blues in the Piedmont style, which is a smooth, fingerpicked sound from the East Coast that shaped roots music in the 1920s and ’30s. Miles often plays at the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation, which helps preserve this music. In this episode of Emmy-nominated Capital Arts, Miles plays a Mississippi John Hurt song called "Louis Collins" which was first recorded in 1928. Watch on YouTube at or link in bio!
