Mary Sheffield’s victory to become Detroit’s first woman mayor, completes a circle that began nearly a century ago.
In 1930, Fannie Peck and the Housewives League of Detroit proved that power starts in the smallest transactions. Their motto: “Don’t buy where you can’t work,” transformed consumer spending into community policy long before the word activism was trending. They forced department stores to hire Black clerks, and kept Black businesses alive through the depression. They built a national movement of women who understood that money is a language in which they were fluent.

Today that fluency sounds like leadership. Mary Sheffield‘s victory is what happens when the same women who once built the city’s economy, finally get to run it.
