THE LAST DANCE. One race left. One winner takes the 2026 GRAVEL EARTH SERIES Series.

Men’s: Mads Würtz Schmidt leads with 210 points — but The River by the Traka with a shorter, punchier 160km is a different beast than Girona. Drechou, Kongstad, Vakoč and Perry are lurking.

Women’s: Just 23 points separate Geerike Schreurs and Axelle Dubau-Prévot. The title will be settled in the Belgian Ardennes.

Houffalize left women’s gravel racing with more questions than answers.

We put those questions directly to the UEC and UCI Gravel World Series organisers. Here’s what came back:

→ The start order was based on a survey of elite women, but that survey was an imperfect first attempt at solving a genuinely difficult problem, and it showed in Houffalize’s ex*****on.

→ Unqualified male riders started ahead of qualified women because the European Championships are folded into the wider UCI Gravel World Series, where licensed and unlicensed riders race together by design.

→ To their credit, organisers recognise the current approach isn’t working as it should. They’ve committed to more rider engagement, including direct meetings with elite women before the World Championships.

The frustrating part is how little disagreement there actually is on the solution. Riders, race directors, governing bodies, fans and media all seem to agree: women should get their own race.

It’s not perfect. It shows signs of progress.

What it needs now is action.

A note on our headline: we know “The Problem With Women” drew criticism, and we understand why. We respect that reaction.

PRO. Gravel has always advocated for women’s racing, and that hasn’t changed. Our choice of title was deliberately provocative, but we trust our audience to see this as the multifaceted issue it is. The “problem” isn’t women. It’s the UCI’s stance and regulations towards them. For them women are a problem. A problem they have to solve and quickly solve as to ensure their needs are met and given equal attention as the men’s.

Elite women have the same average speed as 64-74 year old men so started after them. Then almost half the female field wasn’t allowed to finish, even though they’d have made the cut-off. Meanwhile, men who never even qualified got to start ahead of them.

This isn’t a scheduling quirk. It’s a problem we keep seeing at major gravel events.

That problem is women.

The regulatory bodies just don’t know what to do with them. Despite it being pretty simple, show the respect qualified riders deserve.

Give women their own race.

He crests the climb with legs gone heavy and lungs full of dust, and there it is: the sea, flat and silver, stretched out somewhere far below. He is only halfway. Ahead, mountains await pressed up against the sky, patient and indifferent. He is tired. He is filthy. He is content. He clicks back into a low gear and keeps turning the pedals, one stroke at a time, moving onwards to finish a ride of a lifetime.

This is Badlands.

800-plus kilometres and over 14,000 metres of climbing through the deserts, sierras and abandoned villages of Granada and Almería, a self-supported ultra-distance gravel race that has, in a few short years, become one of the most talked-about events on the Ultra Cycling calendar. The 2026 edition sets off shortly, and for the riders lining up, the ocean views and the mountains still to come are very much the point.

We chat with co-founder David Rodríguez to find out what expect and how the pre event nerves and excitement are building.
