Union Minister Nitin Gadkari sparked a major controversy after a video surfaced where he admitted to telling Indian officials to "copy-paste" ethanol safety standards from the United States and Europe to bypass years of bureaucratic delays.

Political activist Tehseen Poonawalla shared a video clip of Gadkari speaking about the framing of India's ethanol policy. In the video transcript, Gadkari explained that Indian departments typically take three to four years just to draft a set of standards.

Frustrated by the delays, Gadkari recalled giving specific instructions to his officials: "Bring the American standards, remove the heading, put our stamp on it, and declare it. Why are you wasting time? America and Europe's safety protocols will definitely be better than ours; they must have thought about safety more than us. Why waste five years of my five-year ministerial tenure just studying standards?"

Opponents and civilians argued that copying foreign standards ignores distinct Indian vehicle types, high-humidity weather conditions, and infrastructural realities.

A powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia causing at least 20 deaths, multiple injuries, and severe structural destruction. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Colombia's geological service reported that the tremor occurred at 7:34 AM local time at a depth of roughly 107 kilometres (66 miles).

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, who assumed office just three days prior, has convened an emergency committee at the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) to coordinate search, rescue, and damage assessment efforts. The civil aeronautics agency has suspended operations at six regional airports including those in Pereira, Manizales, and Quibdó due to facility damage.

The earthquake's reach extended well beyond Colombia's borders, triggering strong shaking and evacuations in neighbouring Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela. This disaster comes less than two months after devastating twin earthquakes hit nearby Venezuela in late June, keeping regional emergency services on high alert for severe aftershocks.

Angry Truck Driver Blocks Samruddhi Expressway

A major traffic gridlock paralyzed the Mumbai-bound corridor of the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway for nearly two hours on Sunday afternoon, August 9, 2026.

The multi-kilometer logjam was intentionally triggered by an enraged container truck driver who parked his massive multi-axle trailer horizontally across all lanes before fleeing the spot with the vehicle's keys.

The chaos unfolded around noon when a team from the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) intercepted a large commercial trailer traveling from Nagpur. Transport officials issued a heavy e-challan of ₹13,500 for illegal halting along the expressway and violations of standard highway transit rules. Fellow truck drivers alleged that even after the penalty process was initiated, RTO officials aggressively confiscated the vehicle's registration papers and keys, leaving the driver stranded and unable to proceed. On social media, local operators raised allegations of administrative harassment.

Regional Transport Office officials, including RTO Officer Sandeep Mukhe and Regional Transport Officer Kiran Bidkar, strongly refuted any claims of high-handedness or wrongdoing, clarifying that proper legal protocol was being enforced for visible traffic violations.
