Inside ICE detention facilities, families and attorneys have reported dirty water, worm-infested food, and lights kept on 24 hours a day, leading to physical and mental health impacts for children as young as one year old. In 2025, ICE has reported the highest number of deaths in its custody of any single year in two decades.

2025 has seen the most deaths in ICE custody of any single year in two decades, reaching 31 reported deaths as of late December. Immigration lawyers and civil rights groups are receiving reports of medical neglect and a lack of adequate food and water in ICE detention facilities. About half of these deaths occurred within a month of being detained, with six of them happening within only a week. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security told Evident “ICE takes its commitment to promoting safe, secure, humane environments for those in our custody very seriously.”
