MY HUSBAND AND OUR 3 SONS DIED DURING A STORM — FIVE YEARS LATER, MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER CAME UP TO ME AND SAID, "MOM, I KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED THAT DAY. THE POLICE LIED TO YOU."
Ben and I brought up eight children — five daughters and three sons. My family was everything to me.
When the boys got a bit older, Ben started a tradition: a little getaway just with his sons. A special father-and-sons weekend.
But five years ago, when he took the three boys to a far-off cabin for that trip, they never returned. A fierce storm hit while they were traveling, and Ben lost control of the car.
The police later discovered the vehicle overturned in the woods. There were no survivors.
None of this made sense. Ben had been taking the boys to that cabin for years. He ALWAYS made sure to check the forecast and could sense when storms were on the horizon. Could it be that this time he hadn’t checked the weather?
That day, our family friend Aaron — who is a police officer — arrived to lead the investigation. He mentioned that the car must have gone off a hill and rolled multiple times, which indicated that survival was impossible.
In a heartbeat, my world shattered. I had to summon whatever strength I had left to continue for the sake of my five daughters.
Five years have flown by, and I still think about Ben and my sons every single day.
Recently, my youngest, Lucy, had been inquiring more about her father and brothers. She was just six years old when it happened, and I knew she was seeking answers.
The memories were too hurtful to relive, so I avoided going into specifics.
Last night, Lucy crept into my room and woke me.
I was taken aback and asked:
"Sweetheart, is everything okay?"
She appeared pale and replied:
"Mom, I found something... a note Dad hid inside my teddy bear... it fell out."
I inquired:
"Sweetheart, what are you talking about?"
Her eyes brimmed with tears:
"MOM, I KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO DAD AND MY BROTHERS. THE POLICE LIED TO YOU. IT WASN'T THE WAY AARON TOLD YOU IT WAS." ⬇️
