Tiwa Savage Gives 17.5 Million to Malawi Music School, Speaks Out Against Gender Violence

Nigerian Afrobeats icon Tiwa Savage was in Malawi last month (August), and she came with more than just music.
The Nigerian star donated 17.5 million, about $10,000, to Music Crossroads Malawi in Lilongwe. The gift will help the music school repair equipment and buy new instruments.
The visit was done in partnership with the UN Spotlight Initiative, which fights violence against women and girls across the world.
While meeting students, Tiwa also shared big news: she wants to bring her Tiwa Savage Music Foundation to Malawi. She already runs the foundation in Nigeria to help young artists.
“I dream of bringing the foundation here to partner with you, to better equip us all,” she told the excited students and teachers.
At 46, Tiwa told the students not to give up despite rejection. “Every stereotype they tried to put on me, I broke it. I’m standing here today as a 46-year-old woman. Don’t give up.”
Music Crossroads Director, Mathews Mfune, thanked her and said the donation came at the right time.
As a Spotlight Initiative ambassador, Tiwa met survivors of gender-based violence, spoke with community leaders, and joined a public forum urging women and girls to report abuse.
She also met First Lady Gertrude Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace to talk about how musicians can help change mindsets about violence.
Following the meeting, the First Lady said:
"It was a pleasure to welcome Nigerian musician and actress Tiwa Savage to Kamuzu Palace today. During our meeting, we discussed the powerful role creative artists play in driving positive social change. I strongly believe our artists possess a unique influence, and I call upon them to use their platforms, talents, and voices to champion the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).“
“Malawi has been beautiful,” she said. “I thought I would meet victims. Instead I met conquerors.”
The Spotlight Initiative said her visit was meant to put a spotlight on gender violence in Malawi and show the work being done to end it.
