Gloria Steinem’s childhood was responsibility, not play. At ten, she cared for her mentally ill mother in Toledo, Ohio. College at Smith gave her a voice. Rejected by New York newsrooms, she went undercover at the Pl***oy Club, exposing low wages and demeaning conditions in “I Was a Pl***oy Bunny.” She became a defining force in the women’s liberation movement—writing, speaking, organizing, and co-founding Ms. Magazine, the National Women’s Political Caucus, and initiatives for girls’ empowerment. In 2013, President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. For six decades, Gloria refused to be quiet, proving that telling the truth can change the world.
