The World's Worst Oil Related Disaster You've Never Heard Of: "It was an apocalyptic nightmare..."
After a visit to Ecuador in 1993, human rights lawyer Steven Donziger and other attorneys brought a class-action lawsuit against Texaco (later Chevron) on behalf of over 30,000 farmers and Indigenous people after "Amazon Chernobyl," a 1,700-square-mile environmental disaster brought on by oil extraction and production.
Chevron has never paid the $9.5bn judgment it lost in 2011. In 2014, a US court ruled it was obtained by fraud, a finding Steven disputes, as he told us in 2020. Last December, an arbitration tribunal ordered Ecuador to pay Chevron $220m in legal costs instead, something Chevron is now asking a US court to enforce.
As of 2026, the 30,000 farmers and Indigenous people have received nothing.
