The oldest known meteorites are about 4.6 billion years old, forming at the same time as our solar system. Primitive meteorites called chondrites contain tiny mineral grains that predate Earth itself, preserving the original building blocks of planets. These space rocks act as time capsules, helping scientists understand how the Sun and planets formed from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust.
