🌉 Travel Tuesday | Golden Gate Bridge
🌉 Named after the Golden Gate Strait, the bridge’s famous “International Orange” color was originally just primer. Other ideas included black and yellow stripes or red and white “candy cane” colors, but architect Irving Morrow chose orange because it stood out in the fog and blended with the landscape.
📏 Its towers rise 746 feet above the water, and the suspension cables contain enough wire to wrap around Earth three times.
🦺 Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss added a movable safety net during construction that saved 19 workers, later called the “Halfway to Hell Club.” Sadly, 11 workers died after a scaffolding collapse.
🌎 During construction in 1935, workers experienced a major earthquake that caused the towers to sway up to 16 feet.
🎉 During the bridge’s 50th anniversary in 1987, more than 750,000 people walked across it, causing the bridge to flatten slightly from the weight.
