The Office of Personnel Management is anticipating a wave of retirement applications, stemming from the increasing number of federal employees who have opted into the Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA) and the deferred resignation program (DRP).

With so many currently heading for the exit, it’s a good time for federal employees to improve their understanding of the retirement process, including separating facts from common misconceptions.

Judge William Alsup ruled late Friday that U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) “exceeded its own powers,” and “directed agencies to fire under false pretense,” telling probationary employees that they were being terminated for poor performance.

The ruling directs many agencies to update their personnel records to specify that these employees were not fired for poor performance or misconduct.

When the dust settled on Capitol Hill and the One Big Beautiful Bill finally passed, most federal benefits emerged unscathed. While current and prospective federal retirees may have breathed a sigh of relief at that outcome, that doesn’t mean nothing has changed.

Other provisions in the bill may affect the way they approach financial planning, and are worth taking into account and discussing with a federal retirement consultant.

Most civilian federal employees will see a 1% pay increase in 2026, according to a pay plan the White House quietly transmitted to Congress, with one big exception: Law enforcement officers will see bigger raises, though it’s not yet clear exactly which ones.
