The House may be out, but the Senate returns this week with a lot still up in the air. Appropriations are moving slowly as two bills have cleared the House, and only one is pending in the Senate. A continuing resolution looks likely, and talk of a shutdown is already starting. Meanwhile, redistricting is back in the spotlight. WTOP News’ Mitchell Miller joined the Federal Drive with Terry Gerton to break down what’s ahead.
"The Senate will be staying in session and they're really trying to get a lot of these confirmation hearings wrapped up," WTOP's Mitchell Miller said.

If nothing changes, Social Security benefits will start to decline by 2034. There are simply more people drawing Social Security benefits than there are people paying into the program. There is a lot of talk about how to solve the problem, but so far, not much action. Dr. Gopi Shah Goda, director of the Retirement Security Project and senior fellow in Economic Studies at The Brookings Institution, joined the Federal Drive with Terry Gerton to discuss what ideas might work.
"Starting in 2034, the Social Security Trustees say that they'll only be able to cover 81% of promised benefits," Dr. Gopi Shah Goda said.

Between the largest force reduction in its history and major workforce realignments, the Social Security Administration has been struggling to deliver basic services. Kathleen Romig, director of Social Security and Disability Policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, joined the Federal Drive with Terry Gerton with more details on the impacts of these staffing reductions.
The DOGE-driven reductions at SSA "is threatening customer service for all the retirees, survivors and people with disabilities," Kathleen Romig said.

The U.S. Department of State laid off nearly 1,350 employees earlier this month, but certain bureaus and offices are feeling those cuts more than others.
Overall, a small percentage of employees who received RIF notices were terminated by accident, and have since been reinstated.
