Why does one sip of cold water sometimes feel like an electric shock inside your tooth? 🦷❄️

Your tooth may look solid from the outside, but beneath the enamel is dentin — a structure containing thousands of microscopic, fluid-filled tubules.

When dentin becomes exposed, temperature changes can cause rapid movement of fluid inside these tubules.

That movement can stimulate sensory nerves near the pulp.

And your brain interprets it as that familiar…

⚡ sharp “ZING.”

This is known as the hydrodynamic mechanism of dentin hypersensitivity.

So sensitivity isn’t necessarily the cold simply “touching the nerve.”
