Marlowe died in May 1593. The first Shakespeare plays appeared in 1593.

The man who killed him received an immediate royal pardon. The inquest was held the day after his death.

All three witnesses were connected to the Elizabethan intelligence service. In 2016 Oxford University Press acknowledged Marlowe as co-author of three Shakespeare plays.

The theory cannot be proven. But Christopher Marlowe was a spy.

And spies know how to disappear.

In 1949 Simone de Beauvoir asked — what is a woman? Her answer changed everything. 'One is not born a woman. One becomes one.' The Vatican banned the book. It sold 22,000 copies in the first week. Betty Friedan said it started the American women's movement. De Beauvoir wrote it in 1949. The world is still catching up.

Lord of the Flies was rejected 21 times. One editor called it an absurd and uninteresting fantasy not really about anything at all. Faber and Faber rescued it from the rejection pile. It became one of the most studied novels in educational history. Golding won the Nobel Prize. The editor who rejected it has been anonymous ever since. Twenty-one wrong. One right.

Hemingway never said write drunk edit sober. It appeared in someone else's novel three years after he died. What he actually said was harder and more true. 'All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.' Not beautiful. Not impressive. True. The iceberg theory. Seven-eighths beneath the surface. The reader feels what you never say.

Dostoevsky knew The Brothers Karamazov would be his last novel. He wrote it as if it was. Ivan — the intellectual — makes the most devastating argument against God ever written in fiction. If God loves humanity why does he allow children to suffer? Then Dostoevsky answers his own argument. Not with theology. With love. He died two months after finishing it. He pressed every year of suffering he had ever endured into every page.

Poe wrote Annabel Lee in his final months.

His wife Virginia had died of tuberculosis two years earlier at 24, so poor they had only a thin coat to keep her warm.

He never recovered.

In the poem the lover refuses to accept death ends love — he lies beside her grave every night.

Annabel Lee was published two days after Poe was found dying in the street.

The poem about refusing separation published by a man who had just lost everything.

In 1922 Hadley Hemingway left a suitcase on a Paris train. Inside were all of Hemingway's manuscripts — originals and carbon copies.

Two years of work. Gone forever. He never blamed her publicly. He went back to Paris and started again from nothing.

What came from that restart was The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms. We will never know what was in the suitcase. But we know what came from losing it.

The CIA studied it. World War Two codebreakers tried. Alan Turing's team tried. Modern computers tried. All of them failed.

The illustrations show plants that do not exist and women bathing in green pools.

Anyone can see it at Yale University. Nobody can read it.

For 600 years someone has been trying to tell us something.

We still do not know what.

Only the Bible and Shakespeare have outsold her. In 1926 she vanished for eleven days. A thousand police officers searched. Fifteen thousand volunteers.

Arthur Conan Doyle took her glove to a medium.

She was found at a hotel attending the dances every evening under her husband's mistress's name.

She never explained it.

The greatest mystery writer in history left one mystery unsolved. Her own.
