SUMIRE UESAKA TEMPORARILY STEPS BACK FROM SOCIAL MEDIA AFTER SERIOUS THREATS
Sumire Uesaka, the Japanese voice actress behind Gunko in One Piece, has temporarily suspended her personal social media activity after reportedly receiving serious threats. Her agency, VOICE KIT, announced that it had received multiple emails containing threats directed at the actress, including one message in which the sender allegedly claimed to know where she lives and threatened to kidnap and kill her by September 27.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, VOICE KIT has notified the police and requested an investigation. As a precautionary measure, Uesaka has stopped making personal posts on social media. Her accounts will remain active, but future updates will be handled by her staff and limited to official communications. Her appearance at Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair 2026, scheduled for September 19 and 20, has also been canceled.
The incident comes only days after Uesaka appeared in the Version 7.1 livestream for Genshin Impact, where she voices Odette. The broadcast received some criticism online, but there is currently no evidence connecting those reactions to the threats against Uesaka. This is also not the first time she has faced such behavior. In 2017, a 20-year-old man was arrested after repeatedly posting death threats against her. Uesaka is also widely known for voicing Lum in Urusei Yatsura and Hayase Nagatoro in Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro!
