When I was 10, I asked my parents for Patrick O’Connell’s cookbook. Not only was I gifted this book, but I was surprised with a trip to the small town of Washington, Virginia for dinner at his restaurant, The Inn at Little Washington.
To say I was amazed would be an understatement. This was the first time that I had food that made me think. Each dish told a story of culinary mastery and passion rooted in a simple American upbringing that made me excited, surprised and nostalgic all at once. As if the night could not get any better, Patrick visited our table and offered to give me a tour of his kitchen before signing his book that had been glued to my side since we had been guided to our table by incense and Gregorian chants. I remember asking him how to make a chocolate tea cup during the tour (10 year old me was very much into W***y Wonka), as well as him offering to cook me anything in the cookbook.
I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to dine at The Inn several more times since then, including this past month. I was able to meet Patrick again and show him the cookbook that he signed nearly 20 years ago. That singular dinner had a massive impact on my culinary journey and is one of the many reasons that I love food and cooking as much as I do and love sharing this passion through LoFi Eats (which actually ended up paying for this meal). I have dined in many restaurants in many countries, but there is something so special about the overall experience that Patrick has created. Thank you for another amazing night.
