“Mom.” It is only one word, but for Cia Edmonds, it means everything. Six months ago, her 12-year-old daughter Maya was shot in the head during a school mass shooting, and doctors initially did not believe she would survive the night. Somehow, she did. The months that followed were filled with terrifying complications — MRSA in her lungs, meningitis, brain swelling, fluid leaking from her skull and four brain surgeries. Her mother watched her daughter fight through a trauma that changed every part of their lives. There were days when Cia had to grieve the child Maya used to be while still sitting beside the child who was fighting to survive. But progress slowly began to appear. Maya learned to communicate through buttons and an iPad, became more aware of her surroundings and started showing familiar pieces of her personality again. Her little smirk returned. So did the eye rolls and sarcasm between mother and daughter. Cia says she now sees “fragments” of the Maya she once knew blossoming back to life. Maya understands enough to know she is still in the hospital, and sometimes she cries because she wants to go home. But then she gave her mother something she had been praying for every day for months. She said, “Mom.” Cia says she prayed for that moment every single day. his mother, Carissa, is believed to have suffered a seizure while driving, their vehicle went into a pond with Weston trapped inside. He remained underwater for approximately 11 minutes before rescuers pulled him out. Then first responders refused to give up, performing CPR for an incredible 52 minutes until they finally got his pulse back. That was Miracle #1. Weston was rushed by helicopter to a Michigan hospital while his mother received treatment at another hospital. Days later, Carissa suffered another seizure herself, giving doctors an important clue about what may have caused the terrifying crash. Once she was well enough, she was reunited with her son and husband, Bryce. Then came the moment this family had been desperately waiting for. Doctors told them Weston is going to survive. Miracle #2. The road ahead remains incredibly long. His family has been warned that he could spend many months, potentially more than a year, in the hospital, and there are still questions about how much recovery his brain and body will need. But today, they are choosing hope. They are choosing gratitude. And they are choosing to keep praying. believe will always be there. At 22, he was working, going to school and helping provide for his family in Donna, Texas. His mother, Martha, and his younger siblings Ashly, Brandon and Dilan depended on him, and his siblings saw him as someone almost like a father figure. Then came the devastating news that no family was prepared to receive. Jesús was driving home early Sunday morning when his truck left the road in Edinburg, entered a canal and caught fire. He was gone far too soon. Behind the heartbreaking headlines is a young man remembered for so much more than the way his life ended. Jesús loved cooking, dancing and making people laugh. Friends describe him as cheerful, loving, hardworking and respectful. His former bandmates from Donna North High School remember a young man who was always full of life, joy and laughter. Those memories are what his family will carry now as they prepare to say goodbye Thursday. His siblings will have to grow up without the big brother they leaned on, and his mother will have to face life without the son who helped support their home. No words can make that absence disappear. But perhaps remembering the person Jesús was can remind his family that his life mattered deeply. For Jon Duncan and his wife, Tiffany, the hope was that removing his bladder would finally give them a path forward after months of fighting cancer. Jon was diagnosed with high-grade bladder cancer in January 2025 and went through five surgeries, chemotherapy and repeated BCG bladder treatments. But the cancer remained aggressive. So they made the difficult journey from Montana to Utah for a life-changing operation at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Surgeons removed his bladder and created a new one from a section of his intestine. The procedure itself was enormous, and the couple knew recovery would involve many more trips between Utah and Montana. They were prepared for a long road — but they were hoping it would be a road toward healing. Now Tiffany says Jon has developed a kidney infection, and doctors are testing his blood to make sure the infection has not turned into sepsis. She is frightened, exhausted and unwilling to leave him alone. After years of serious health problems, including permanent nerve damage from a back surgery and a broken neck that required spinal fusion, Jon is once again being asked to fight. Please pray that this latest complication is caught and treated quickly. Pray that Jon's body responds to treatment, that his blood cultures remain negative for sepsis and that the cancer is finally behind him. And please remember Tiffany, who is carrying an enormous burden while refusing to leave her husband's side. ❤️🙏

Kari Sims has already endured more pain than any 16-year-old should ever have to experience. After being struck and pinned beneath a vehicle in Texas, she suffered devastating injuries that included broken legs, a shattered pelvis, a broken hip and severe burns. She has gone through surgeries and skin grafts, including procedures for serious facial injuries. Her recovery has also been complicated by severe pneumonia, C. diff and another infection, leaving doctors closely monitoring her condition and ordering additional scans as they search for answers. Now, with a tracheostomy, Kari cannot talk. But before the procedure, she managed to write one question that says so much about the confusion surrounding this nightmare: “Why?” Her grandmother Vicki had to tell her that she had been hit by a car and was now in an Austin hospital. Vicki says she hopes Kari does not remember the crash, because the thought of her granddaughter carrying that memory is heartbreaking. Yet through everything, Vicki stays beside her. She holds her hand, speaks softly to her and repeats the words she wants Kari to remember: “Mimi is here. Mimi loves you. You are safe.” Kari lost her mother only six months ago, and now her grandmother is refusing to leave her side. A simple bike ride with her brother has left one family facing a nightmare no parent should ever have to endure. Twelve-year-old Calvin Shepard tragically lost his life after an SUV struck him and his 13-year-old sister, Karalee, while the siblings were riding their bicycles near Williamston, Michigan. Karalee survived the crash but suffered a severe head injury and remains in critical condition. Now her parents, Cody and Raquel, are being forced to grieve their son while sitting beside their daughter and praying she survives. Their family has already given so much to others, with Raquel spending her time coaching and encouraging children, including this summer when she coached her child in swimming. Now the community is surrounding her family with the same love she has given to so many. But right now, her message is simple and heartbreaking: “Please don’t stop praying. Sabrena Beard reached out with an update she never wanted to share. Her 8-year-old daughter, who has been battling brain cancer for months, is back in the hospital, and doctors say the tumor has grown. She became severely dehydrated after her heart rate climbed dangerously high, and now she has stopped eating. For this family, the past year has been filled with moments of fear followed by moments of hope. What began as headaches eventually led to a brain tumor diagnosis. Surgery came only seven days later, followed by another procedure, months of treatment and countless hospital days. When she rang the bell at St. Jude in April, her family had every reason to believe they might finally be turning a corner. In May, they were told the tumor was shrinking. But the hope they had fought so hard to hold onto was shattered when her condition worsened and they learned the cancer had spread. Now Sabrena sits beside her daughter, talking to her, holding her hand and asking her to keep fighting. She knows the tumor is progressing, but she is still her daughter’s mother — and mothers never stop hoping for another day. Please keep this little girl in your prayers. The news has changed everything for Mae’s family, but Madison is trying to find strength in the middle of unimaginable pain. After watching her six-year-old daughter become increasingly sick and confused, she was finally told that the cancer has spread extensively through Mae’s brain and that doctors consider her cancer terminal. Madison says she feels trapped in a void, not knowing what to do or how to process a future she never thought she would have to face. Yet she also wants other parents walking through devastating diagnoses to know something important: it is okay to be angry. It is okay to scream. It is okay to question God. Faith does not mean pretending you are not hurting. For Madison, faith means continuing to believe that God sees her even when she cannot understand why this is happening. She is still asking people to pray — not because everything suddenly feels okay, but because Mae is still here, still being treated and still surrounded by people who love her. One of the most heartbreaking tributes can also be one of the simplest. Torren O’Grady was just 11 years old when he left home on his bike for school and tragically never made it there. Now his lacrosse family is asking people across Connecticut to leave a porch light on and place a lacrosse stick outside in his memory. Torren wore No. 49 for the Stonington Bears youth lacrosse team, and that number is now becoming a symbol of a community refusing to let his memory disappear. Families and lacrosse programs, including people who never had the chance to meet him, are joining together to shine a light for a little boy whose life was taken far too soon. A porch light cannot bring Torren home, and a lacrosse stick cannot erase his family’s pain. For four children, the world suddenly became a much different place when their father, Steve Matheson, tragically died after being struck by lightning while riding a jet ski near St. Petersburg, Florida. Steve was a devoted husband and father who found his greatest happiness in his family. His wife, Abbie, and their children were at the heart of his life, and the love he had for them was something those around him knew well. He was also a passionate BYU football fan and a man whose faith in his Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, was deeply important to him. Now Abbie is left to navigate life without her husband, while four children face growing up without their father beside them.
