“We’ve always wanted to go to Greenland.”
I heard this over and over when I was in Iceland ten years ago with our son, Alex.
Since you can’t get directly to Greenland from the U.S., I was curious about doing it from Iceland.
Turns out, it’s pretty easy.
At the time, they had one flight ✈️ per day going each way. It wasn’t cheap, but how many times do you get to hop on a two-hour flight to Kulusuk, Greenland?
We left in the morning, spent half a day exploring, and came back that evening. There wouldn’t have been anywhere to stay in the small town of 500 people.
The flight coming in over icebergs was absolutely spectacular! We landed on a little airstrip between some mountains and the ocean, then walked a mile into town.
We saw a beached whale that was going to feed half the town for a month or two, wooden kayaks like they’ve been using for hundreds of years, 10-year-old kids carrying rifles to shoot wandering polar bears, lots of Greenlandic Sled dogs (both tame and wild), and a general store that mostly carried products from Denmark. It was a fun afternoon.
When we got back to Reykjavík, Alex and I casually dropped into every conversation the fact that we had just been to Greenland.
“Ah, I’d love to go someday!” was the common response.
“You should,” I’d say. “It’s pretty amazing.”
Do you have a Greenland you’ve always been wanting to do?
You should do it.
