WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 10:00PM THIS EVENING for east central Iowa.

Temporary whiteout conditions across narrow corridors in the warning area. Flash freezing is also expected in these narrow snow bands. Additional snow accumulations up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.

Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Temporary whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life threatening. Strong winds will also make driving difficult.

Following weeks of cold and snowy conditions, a significant change is anticipated this week. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing on multiple days, with highs likely reaching the 40s on Wednesday and Thursday. A sharp cold front will arrive by Thursday evening, causing temperatures to plummet into the single digits. Temperatures are expected to return above freezing by the weekend.

Another round of snow will start to impact the area by sunrise tomorrow morning. Snowfall totals will range from 1-3” with isolated 4”+ in far southeastern Iowa. Roads will be very slick tomorrow morning and afternoon as very cold temperatures will worsen road conditions. Snow will exit the area by late afternoon.

UPDATE: The winter weather advisory has been extended further south to include more counties. Snow accumulations of 2-4 inches are anticipated, along with a potential light glaze of ice. WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY in effect from 1:00pm this afternoon through 3:00am Friday morning.

Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches with isolated amounts to 5 inches.

Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.

AFTERNOON UPDATE:

Several counties have been added to the winter weather advisory and winter storm warning. Snow will begin to fall after sunset and may become heavy at times.

Snow accumulations up to 2” will be possible along and south of Highway 34. Minor ice accumulations are also expected in this area.

North of Highway 34 and south of I-80 in eastern Iowa we expect 2 to 4 inches of snow with the potential for a wintry mix.

Precipitation will fall as all snow along and north of Interstate 80. This is the area where 4 to 6 inches of snow is likely with isolated higher totals possible.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY remains in effect for much of the area from 6:00pm this evening through 6:00am Sunday morning.

Snow is expected north of Interstate 80 with mixed precipitation expected south of Interstate 80. Total snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches along the Interstate 80 corridor to 3 to 6 inches north of the Interstate. A light glaze of ice is also possible along and south of Interstate 80.

Temperatures will stay below average this week with another strong cold front coming through tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures will drop below zero and near record lows Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Temperatures will rise to near freezing this weekend with additional snow chances.
