FLOOD WATCH in effect until 1:00pm Monday for much of Iowa.

Repeated rounds of thunderstorms are expected through the period. Rainfall rates exceeding 1 to 2 inches an hour are possible with the strongest storms and may lead to flash flooding. Area rivers may also start to flood due to runoff from heavy rain.

Rainfall totals of 3-5” will be common with areas of 5”+ possible. There could be areas that experience significant flash flooding.

The Iowa DNR has issued an Air Quality Alert for all of Iowa through midnight Friday night.

Moderate to heavy smoke is expected to impact most of Iowa over the next few days at levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups or even unhealthy for healthy individuals. Sensitive groups include people with respiratory illness or heart disease, children, teenagers, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

The DNR recommends that people avoid long or intense outdoor activities and take frequent breaks until the air quality improves.

Heavy rain is forecast to impact the area late tonight and into tomorrow, producing widespread 1-3 inches of rain, with some areas experiencing higher amounts. Strong to severe storms will be possible, capable of producing flash flooding and strong wind gusts.

While the severe weather will primarily affect areas to our northwest late tonight and into early tomorrow morning, damaging winds near 60mph will be possible as far south as Highway 34. Winds of 60-80mph will be possible north of Interstate 80 as this line of storms moves through. Storms will impact southeastern Iowa after midnight.

An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect until 8:00pm Monday evening for southern and central Iowa. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 are expected. Heat index values in the advisory area will climb as high as 105. Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.
