Today, August 9 is the annual International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. An extremely young 'International Day', celebrating its 27th year for communities that date back (tens of) thousands of years.

Taking a moment to honour the original people and the guardians of the lands. Those who have cared for and respected these spaces from the very beginning; and are still fighting to protect their lands. The many individuals, families and villages who have welcomed me into their homes; foraged, cooked and shared not only their plates, but their time, space and intergenerational knowledge. The places and communities listed here reflect only a VERY small fraction of the people and spaces I met by chance over the years of casual storygathering.

Happy World's Indigenous Peoples Day. Selamat Hari Orang Asal Sedunia. Here's to listening, observing, learning, protecting and respecting.

I rarely post these kind of things because I always thought, well, I'm sure the activists will take care of it. But the data is deafening. The no-show of interest of this forest on Google Trends, the silence, the lack of media support at last week's press conference (the first and ONLY press conference I wanted to attend since starting Plates). Yes, I chose slow journalism over the breaking news beat. But this story might not be around for long.

Plates is an independent food culture magazine based in Malaysia, created with the belief that food has the potential to cross cultural, political and language barriers. This biannual indie print mag seeks to challenge, entertain and inform its readers one plate at a time.
