The City of Waterbury today received a payment of $30.6 million from the Town of Watertown, representing payment in full of the Judgment Account, accrued interest, and past due balances on active water and sewer accounts stemming from a long-standing billing dispute between the two municipalities.

Prior payments of approximately $5.5 million were made between mid-August and mid-October of this year.

“This final payment closes a lengthy and complex legal matter that has spanned several years,” said Mayor Paul Pernerewski. “The outcome ensures that the ratepayers of Waterbury are made whole and that our city’s financial interests are protected.”

The payments follow a recent Connecticut Appellate Court decision upholding a $18.8 million judgment previously awarded to Waterbury in 2023. The judgment resolved a dispute that began in 2018 when Watertown declined to pay the full water and sewer rates established by Waterbury after the expiration of the previous service agreement. The court also affirmed the trial court’s finding that Waterbury’s rates were both reasonable and equitable under state law.
