Seal day. Oil-based Pecan finish on cedar. Nice!

Deck and patio powerwash day. Wet cedar always looks great. Dries much lighter though.

Working solo, as I have on every job this season, takes the rush-rush right out it. Gives me time to do it right. Way more satisfying.

Easy wash day for me, two days ago. Easy seal day, today. Perfect weather.

Power washing technique - from a professional. I’ve been refinishing decks for over 30 summers so I figure I’ve washed a few thousand decks. That’s how you get good at something: doing it over and over. Improving. Plus, I love power washing!

“Condos are my bread and butter”, I used to say. I can knock them out, still. I did these two recently. Two front and two upper level back decks. Brushed.

The homeowner in Clarkston - a referral - told me he used to wash and stain this deck himself - but at 85, he’s “done with that”. He did stay outside and watched me for pretty much the entire job - which sounds annoying but I think we both enjoyed the company. I brushed out the entire job in a color-matched Cabot solid stain... an attractive gray that I had color-matched at Lowe’s. He made a comment that he was a painter during summers off as a teacher - and that he’s faster than I am. I smiled and said I could take my professional airless sprayer out of my trailer and have this “done in no time” but I’m in “no hurry and it’s a small job” and I’m happy to brush out. Came out great, of course, and I plan to get back there soon to take some ‘after photos’. Got most of the 5 gal. can of stain left over - which I hope to sell on another job this summer. It’s a nice soft gray in a high quality stain.

My third composite deck wash already this year, 2024. This one is vintage Trex - which means it’ll take an oil based stain, but I agree with the homeowners: it looks great, as is, nice and clean.
The only finish that Trex recommends now is an absurdly expensive two-step shell coating - which doesn’t sound like such a great idea to me.

Used my surface cleaner on this stamped concrete. ”Looks brand new”, said the homeowner. Quick and easy. Works great on pavers, too. And sidewalks. And driveways. Not decks.

I’ve done this deck several times before… but this time, some of the deck had been replaced and I had a combination of old cedar and new pine to stain. Previously, I had used TWP cedar tone 101 to achieve a high-impact look - and it was visible from way out on the lake - but that wouldn’t work as well on these new pine benches. So, I showed pictures of two recent TWP jobs I finished with TWP pecan - beautiful, but no ‘pop’. So I leaned on my other go-to product: Armstrong Clark mountain cedar, for the orange I needed to blend everything together and ‘pop’. That worked, beautifully.
