Edelbrock Sick Smokies marks the first event for Justin Chestnut's new ride: a '57 Chevrolet 2 door wagon. Can the Sick Week vet survive the trip?

You may have seen Justin Chestnut's '29 Model A on Sick Week before, but for Sick Smokies, he decided a new ride was the ticket for Justin and his wife to experience the trip.

"Cruising the smokies in a classic with my wife during the fall; Why not," said Justin. But did he pick the right car for the job, or will he face an uphill battle?

"I traded for this car and it was a pile let me tell you," he said. "It needed all the glass and all the interior was hacked up along with the wiring and the steering had so much play in it you felt like you was turning just to keep it straight in the road."

The '57 Chevrolet needed nearly a total overhaul, so Justin went for a stroker small block Chevrolet, backed by a Turbo 350. Justin admits the stock rear end might be a worrisome weak point, but he has plans to update it with a 9-inch in time for a Sick Week 2026 appearance with the car.

"I love Sick The Mag, and all of the events," Justin said. "After the very first one I was hooked." He will attempt to tackle Sick Smokies with good friend and fellow Floridian Will Lagerman and his supercharged '68 Camaro.

Don't miss your chance to see all these cool and unique rides (over 250-total competitors) at next week's Edelbrock Sick Smokies, October 12th through the 19th, 2025!

If ever there was a grudge race had the perfect narrative elements, this was it. There was a hero — Garrett Mitchell with his huge social media following — and there was a villain. Joel Grannas probably didn’t intend to fill that role before FL2K, but when he missed a lane call and went on Facebook to vent, the internet was not kind.
Make no mistake, Grannas owns one of the baddest stick shift cars in the country. Grannas was the number one qualifier and a favorite to win FL2K. But when he missed the call, that was all for nought, and Mitchell went on to win the event against drag and driver Chad Fegley.
Grannas’ posts generated a lot of social media attention, with the incident getting relentlessly memed. Never one to miss an opportunity, Mitchell gave Grannas a chance at redemption.
“Grannas Racing. If you’d like to race tomorrow at BMP for $15,000 Leroy is ready. It’s what the people want — 4pm?”
The Supra had about two tenths on Mitchell on paper, but Mitchell wasn’t setting himself up as the duck. He took to heart one of the principles of Sun Tzu’s Art of War — avoid strength, attack weakness.

Edelbrock Sick Smokies, our final drag and drive event of 2025, is less than a week away - October 12-19th, 2025!

It was about a year ago that the epic Edelbrock Sick 66 drag and drive event took place. Edelbrock re-joined the Sick The Magazine family for 2025, and is the title sponsor of next week's Sick Smokies.

Edelbrock has been a longstanding name in the performance industry for over 75 years, and this plays perfectly into Sick Smokies.

The largest gathering of Gasser rides, plus 200 more competitors, will no doubt show representation of well known Edelbrock brand.

Although Edelbrock is the title sponsor for Sick Smokies, they also joined us for a memorable week on Sick The Mag's recent Sick Summer and Sick Michigan Miles events this year!

In an unheard of "rematch of a possible final" - Joel Grannas and Cleetus McFarland staged up a second chance race for $30K at Bradenton Motorsports Park this afternoon!!

After talking to both teams, where all parties apologized for the beef and said they just wanted to duke it out on the drag strip, Grannas and Cleetus both put up $15,000 for a one shot, off the trailer, winner take all race, and Cleetus notched the win!!

Cleetus gets the win with a 6.84 at 217 mph run to a 7.38 at 144 mph result for Grannas, who was ahead at the 1/8-mile mark by nearly a tenth of-a-second, but mentioned he heard a pop, and the car slowed after that.

Cleetus returned to the staging lanes to claim the $30K in cash, and a celebration that included a mariachi band brought in by a fellow racer!

Do you think Grannas should have gotten a second chance?

This wheelstanding Gasser has proven its worth on the track - can it survive 900 miles on the street during next week's Edelbrock Sick Smokies, October 12-19th, 2025?

We're all about drag and drives, but the one off events bring the special and unique elements to the table that make you not want to miss a thing!

This father and son built '61 Ford Falcon Gasser is one of the 70-plus entries registered for Sick Smokies, and based on the photos, it regularly entertains the crowds, as well as driver Adam Lowhorn, in the SouthEast Gasser Association.

"Primitive and old school as it gets," said Adam. "A father and son team with a homebuilt hotrod having fun!"

To compete in the Edelbrock Sick Smokies drag and drive event meant some additional work for the 'Rod Slinger.' "It'll have to be revamped to be put it back on the street, but we will do it for this event," Adam said.

Don't miss your chance to see all these cool and unique rides (over 250-total competitors) at next week's Edelbrock Sick Smokies, October 12th through the 19th, 2025!

Tim Irwin puts his spin on a Gasser-themed Chevy II that will debut at Edelbrock Sick Smokies next week!

Working in the performance industry has its perks, and one of those is getting lots of ideas for either a current or new project.

Tim Irwin has owned and built some cool rides, including Gassers. “I’ve been a chassis builder for most of my working life, and know what it takes to build a competitive car,” Irwin said.

That has played into his interest, as well as a car, for the quickly-approaching Edelbrock Sick Smokies event.
