When I first created Pedaling Life Forward, it was simply an idea. A way to share a bicycle journey with friends and family as I prepared to ride from Iowa to Alabama.

But somewhere along the way, I realized Pedaling Life Forward was never really about the bicycle.

The bicycle may have started the journey, but the message is much bigger than cycling.

Pedaling Life Forward is about choosing to move forward when life would rather see you standing still. It’s about facing adversity, setbacks, disappointments, and challenges without allowing them to define who you are. It’s about understanding that progress isn’t always fast, pretty, or easy. Sometimes moving forward means taking a giant leap. Other times it means taking one small step when that’s all you have left to give.

Life has a way of throwing obstacles in front of all of us. We all face struggles. We all have moments when the road gets rough, the headwinds get stronger, and the destination feels far away.

Pedaling Life Forward is the belief that no matter what road you’re on, you keep going.

The bicycle will always be part of the story. There will be more rides, more adventures, and more miles ahead. But Pedaling Life Forward has become something much greater than cycling. It has become a reminder that forward motion is still forward motion, no matter how slow the pace.

Today, I can honestly say I don’t know exactly what the future holds. I don’t know where every road ahead will lead or what opportunities and challenges may be waiting around the next bend.

What I do know is this: the mission continues.

The journey from Iowa to Alabama may be complete, but the story isn’t over. In many ways, it feels like a new chapter is just beginning.

There are more stories to share. More lessons to learn. More opportunities to encourage others who may be facing their own difficult roads. And there are still ways to continue supporting causes and organizations that help people keep moving forward when life gets hard.

The roads may change. The adventures may look different. But the message remains the same:

Keep moving forward.

One road. One step. One day at a time.

Pedaling Life Forward.

Tina and I are home safe and sound.

After achieving the goal of just over a thousand miles and the continuation of extended miles, countless memories, and one incredible adventure, it’s hard to believe that The Roads Between Corn & Cotton has come full circle.

While the ride from Iowa to Alabama and back home may be complete, the mission continues.

Over the coming days and weeks, I’ll be sharing more stories, lessons learned, and reflections from the journey. There are still plenty of moments from the road that deserve to be told.

I also want to continue raising awareness and support for Americans For Independent Living (AFIL) and the incredible work they do serving veterans. If you’ve been following along, sharing posts, offering encouragement, or making donations, thank you. Every bit of support helps move the mission forward.

And for those who think the bicycle is going to be parked for long…

Six weeks from this Saturday begins RAGBRAI — Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa — a seven-day ride across the state that has introduced countless people to the joy of cycling adventures.

So stay tuned. More stories are coming, the mission continues, and there are still plenty of roads ahead.

Because every veteran is worth fighting for.

As we prepare for the final segment of miles back to Waterloo, I’ve found myself reflecting on this journey and everything it has come to represent.

While the name may be Pedaling Life Forward, this has never been just about riding a bicycle. It’s about perseverance. It’s about continuing to move forward when the road gets difficult. It’s about refusing to give up when life throws challenges in our path.

Over these miles, I’ve experienced headwinds, hills, flat tires, route changes, physical exhaustion, and moments where I questioned my own abilities. But I’ve also experienced something far greater—the incredible goodness of people.

I’ve met strangers who became friends, people who offered encouragement when I needed it most, and countless individuals who reminded me that kindness is still alive and well in this country.

Standing beside Superman reminded me of something:

Superman may wear a cape, but the real heroes I’ve met on this journey wear work boots, cycling shoes, military uniforms, blue jeans, and sometimes no uniform at all. They are the people who continue moving forward and help others do the same.

Every one of us knows someone who is struggling. Some battles are visible, while others are fought quietly behind closed doors. My hope is that by sharing this journey—the successes, the setbacks, the difficult days, and the rewarding moments—it reminds people that progress isn’t always measured by speed or distance. Sometimes it’s simply taking the next step forward.

The fundraising mission remains just as important today as it was when I left Iowa. Every donation helps support AFIL – Americans For Independent Living as they continue their mission of helping veterans move forward through difficult times. If you’ve considered donating, please know that the amount doesn’t matter. Every dollar matters. Every donation adds up. Every act of generosity helps make a difference.

And if donating isn’t possible, I ask for one simple favor: continue sharing this journey and this mission with others. Every share helps spread awareness—not only about the work AFIL is doing, but also about the message that none of us have to face life’s challenges alone.

This chapter of The Roads Between Corn & Cotton may be nearing its end, but the mission continues forward.

Thank you to everyone who has followed along, encouraged me, prayed for me, donated, shared the mission, and helped make this journey something far bigger than a bicycle ride.

Because every veteran is worth fighting for.

And because every person deserves encouragement to keep moving forward.

The Alabama chapter has come to an end, and it’s time to point the pickup north toward Iowa.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to slow down, spend time with family and friends, reflect on the journey, and take in what arriving in Weaver truly meant to me. What began in Waterloo, Iowa as a bicycle ride became so much more than miles, elevation, headwinds, and long days in the saddle.

It became a reminder of the incredible goodness that exists in people.

From complete strangers who offered encouragement, to those who donated, shared posts, sent prayers, provided meals, offered a place to rest, or simply followed along each day—you became part of this journey. Every act of kindness helped carry me forward one road at a time.

As I begin the trip back to Iowa, I’m realizing that while this chapter of The Roads Between Corn & Cotton may be closing, the mission is far from over.

Pedaling Life Forward has always been about more than a bicycle ride. It has been about raising awareness and support for Americans For Independent Living (AFIL) and the work they continue to do serving veterans and helping them move forward in their own journeys.

The donation page will remain open, and if you’re able, I ask you to consider supporting the mission. If a donation isn’t possible, I would be grateful if you continued sharing the story and helping spread the word. Every share, every conversation, and every act of support helps expand the reach of this mission.

Thank you to everyone who followed along, encouraged me when the days were hard, celebrated the victories, shared the journey with others, donated, and kept me in your prayers.

The ride may be over, but the mission continues forward.

Yesterday I shared some thoughts about reflecting on this journey. Today is finally a day to simply relax and enjoy the moment.

Tomorrow, it will be time to start loading everything into the pickup and begin the trip back to what many would call “real life.”

I’m still working through my thoughts and reflections from this adventure. There are so many stories, lessons, and memories from the road that I’m still trying to put into words.

As I continue sorting through those thoughts, I want to once again say thank you to everyone who has followed along, encouraged me, shared the journey with others, supported the mission, made donations, and kept me in your prayers. Your support carried me farther than you’ll ever know.

While this chapter of the journey is beginning to close, the mission continues forward.

The donation page will remain open for those who are able and would still like to support the mission. If donating isn’t possible, I would ask that you continue sharing the journey and the mission with others. Every share, every conversation, and every act of support helps spread awareness and helps Americans For Independent Living continue their work supporting veterans.

I’m not quite ready to put a bow on this chapter just yet. There is still more to share, and I look forward to telling more of the stories from the road in the days ahead.

Stay tuned… there’s more to come.

One road at a time.

Good morning everyone.

After taking a day off following what was possibly the final ride day of this journey, and spending some much-needed time with my beautiful love, Tina, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting.

The miles, the challenges, the victories, the struggles, and the incredible people I’ve met along the way — whether in person, through social media, texts, phone calls, prayers, or words of encouragement.

I truly don’t have the words to fully express how grateful I am for all the support throughout this journey. The kindness, generosity, and the “road magic” that always seemed to appear exactly when it was needed most is something I’ll never forget.

While this chapter of the journey may be nearing its end, the mission continues forward.

I still don’t fully know what the future holds, but as I continue gathering my thoughts, I plan to share more stories and reflections from the road in the days ahead. So stay tuned… there’s still more to come.

The donation page will also remain open over the coming months for anyone who would still like to support the mission and help Americans For Independent Living continue the important work they do supporting veterans.

Thank you all for riding along with me.

After what was possibly the final ride of this journey, arriving at our AirBnB and finally having some quiet time for reflection and simple relaxation, I felt the need to say thank you.

This journey may have reached its final miles.
Waldo may have officially been found.
But the mission continues on.

Over the course of this adventure, I’ve experienced something that the world often forgets to talk about enough… the goodness in people.

Complete strangers offering encouragement.
People stopping to check if I was okay.
Conversations that turned into friendships.
A cold drink on a hard day.
A meal when I needed one.
A place to rest.
A prayer.
A kind word at just the right moment.

What this journey reminded me is that none of us are meant to do life completely alone.

Sometimes people simply need a lift forward.
Not a handout.
Not pity.
Just a little help getting to the next step in the journey.

And there should never be shame in that.

Life can humble any one of us without warning. Circumstances change. Roads get rough. Hills get steeper than expected. Sometimes all a person needs is someone willing to remind them they’re not forgotten and that they can keep moving forward.

That’s a big part of why this mission matters so much to me.

While the bicycle ride may be ending, the purpose behind it continues. There are veterans every single day working through challenges most people never see. Some simply need support, encouragement, resources, or someone willing to help them regain their footing and continue forward.

That’s why I’ll continue asking for support for Americans For Independent Living - AFIL and the work they continue to do serving veterans and helping change lives.

If you are in a position to donate, please know that no amount is too small. Sometimes people hesitate because they feel like they can’t give a “large enough” amount to matter, but the truth is every single contribution adds up and helps continue the mission forward.

And if you’re not in a position to donate, I completely understand and would simply ask that you continue helping spread the word about the journey and the mission. Every share, every conversation, every mention, and every act of helping raise awareness helps Americans For Independent Living - AFIL continue doing the incredible work they do supporting veterans.

If you’ve followed this journey…
Thank you.

If you’ve prayed…
Thank you.

If you’ve encouraged me during difficult days…
Thank you.

If you’ve donated, purchased merchandise, shared a post, or helped spread the mission to others…
Thank you.

Every act of kindness mattered more than you probably realize.

This journey has impacted me in ways I’m still trying to fully process, but one thing I know for certain is this:

There is still a tremendous amount of good in this world.

And together, one road at a time, we can continue helping move people forward.

Because every veteran is worth it.

Day 16 of The Roads Between Corn & Cotton is in the record books!! This is the beyond portion or continuation segment!!!

Today was a real test of resilience.

Not long after I started the day, the rain moved in and stayed with me on and off for most of the ride. What looked like a manageable 40-ish mile day quickly turned into one filled with rolling hills that just seemed to never end.

Then came the climb up and over Cemetery Mountain.

By the time I was grinding my way toward the top and finally saw the cemetery sitting there waiting on me, I honestly started wondering if I was about to become a permanent resident myself. 😂

But once I crested the top, the journey kept pushing forward. More rolling hills. More climbing. More moments testing both mind and body. Eventually the pavement disappeared and turned into gravel… or maybe it was more of a gravel path than a road. Either way, it definitely added another layer to the adventure.

As difficult as parts of the day were, it was also incredibly gratifying.

There’s something about the back roads of Alabama that forces you to slow down mentally, reflect, and simply take in the world around you. The quiet. The farm animals. The wildlife. The sound of tires rolling through wet gravel and country roads. Days like this remind me that this journey has never only been about miles.

It’s about experiencing the road for exactly what it is — unpredictable, challenging, beautiful, and worth continuing forward one pedal stroke at a time.

Thank you again to everyone continuing to follow along, encourage, support, share, and help spread the mission. The ride may challenge me daily, but your support continues helping push me forward.

Because every veteran is worth it!!
