In a short few years, Mr. Johnson, 37, has made a comfortable living owning a landscape business that he began just shy of his twentieth birthday and now is one of the north country’s most prolific developers and real estate owners.

Working with a series of old friends, he currently owns dozens of properties through Jake Johnson Properties mainly in and around Watertown but also has branched out with commercial and warehousing acquisitions in other parts of Northern New York and a 130-unit apartment building in Rochester.

“Because of increased interest in renewable (electricity), there’s new ways for consumers to buy energy,” Emmett Smith said. “NP&L was founded to take advantage of those opportunities.”

Although the sign out front says Boralex, the Sissonville hydroelectric dam is being run by a small local power company aiming to provide reasonably priced renewable power directly to local

City officials were surprised in February to learn that a New Jersey renewable energy company is interested in developing a hydroelectric site on Sewall’s Island.
