COPENHAGEN 43, LAFARGEVILLE 34 (OT) Copenhagen, known for its defense, was pushed to its limits against LaFargeville in the Frontier League girls “D” Division final – so much so that it took an overtime period to determine a champion. In the end the Golden Knights (18-1) prevailed, they went on a 9-0 run in overtime to defeat LaFargeville in a fashion that didn’t resemble the four quarters that preceded it. Reagen Dalrymple scored five of her eight points in overtime. “Raegan took it to the hole strong and that made the difference,” Copenhagen’s Madison Freeman said. However, for four quarters, LaFargeville (14-4) and Copenhagen went back and forth, making shots, blocking shots and causing as much discomfort for each other as possible. “We struggled right from the get-go,” Copenhagen coach Natalie Scott said. “Not too much defensively but offensively we were struggling. We hung in there with the defense, that’s why defense is the most important.” Copenhagen held the Red Knights to one of their lowest point totals of the season. But it didn’t come easy. “I think a lot of it was that they spread it out and make our defense have to move their feet,” Scott said. “And if we don’t move our feet then they’re in behind us and that causes all kinds of issues.” Sarah Johnson led the scoring for LaFargeville with 15 points. Charisma DeMarse had nine. The Red Knights succeeded on offense the most when they worked quickly. Scoring quickly or in transition prevented Copenhagen from getting set on defense. The Golden Knights still managed to contain the LaFargeville offense and Rachel Davis in particular, the team’s top scorer, who finished with eight points. Copenhagen looked to disrupt Davis by trying to get its taller players in front of her when near the basket. That responsibility fell on Dalrymple and Charli Carroll, a call-up from junior varsity whose height exceeded anyone else on the court. “She was a difference-maker for us today,” Scott said of Carroll. “Her and, I think defensively, my eighth grader off the bench, Aubree Smykla. They were our two difference-makers today. God bless them, God bless the youth.” Carroll finished with nine points.
