HBD RELOAD! Along with the birthday of Kirk Hammett, we will mark the anniversary of the release of the Metallica album "Reload" tonight on HardDrive Radio XL with Lou Brutus.

The record dropped in 1997 as the band's seventh studio album and served as a companion to the previous year’s "Load" sessions. The core lineup on the record is James Hetfield on vocals and rhythm guitar, Lars Ulrich on drums, Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, and Jason Newsted on bass. The album continued the band’s exploration of hard rock and blues-inflected styles recorded during the same lengthy creative period that produced Load.

The singles released from the album include "Fuel," "The Memory Remains," and "Better Than You." Supporting musicians included Marianne Faithfull contributing vocals on "The Memory Remains." Behind the boards, the album was produced by Bob Rock with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, engineered by Randy Staub, and mixed by Bob Rock and Randy Staub. Additional engineering support came from Brian Dobbs, with mastering handled by George Marino.

The cover art features a photographic piece titled P**s and Blood XXVI by artist Andres Serrano, continuing the visual theme begun with the Serrano artwork on Load. The design and layout were completed by Metallica and their longtime collaborator, designer Andie Airfix. The album photography included contributions from Anton Corbijn and various studio photographers documenting the period’s sessions.

AMERICANA! Tonight on HardDrive Radio XL, Lou Brutus will celebrate the anniversary of the release of the album "Americana" by The Offspring on this day in 1998.

The record features Dexter Holland on vocals and guitar, Noodles on lead guitar, Greg K. on bass, and Ron Welty on drums. The band recorded the album primarily at Eldorado Recording Studios and at The Hook in North Hollywood. Production was handled by Dave Jerden with additional engineering by Annette Cisneros, Bryan Carlstrom, and assistants including James Murray and Rob Seifert.

Mixing for the album was completed by Tom Lord-Alge, with mastering done by George Marino. Programming and additional musical elements on several tracks were contributed by Mark Mothersbaugh and Josh Freese, who also played drums on select songs. The recording process combined traditional punk instrumentation with contemporary studio techniques of the late 1990s.

The cover artwork was created by illustrator Frank Kozik and depicts a stylized, retro-inspired image of a boy on a swing with a giant sand flea. Additional layout and design were handled by Sean Evans. The album packaging followed the visual aesthetic common in Kozik’s pop-surrealist work, giving the release a distinctive identity that matched the band’s thematic direction during this era.

Today in 1998, Metallica released their cover of the Bob Seger classic Turn The Page.

It’s testament to the might of Metallica that they can improve a classic song by one of America’s great songwriters. The Four Horsemen’s Turn The Page is just as dusty and emotional as Seger’s, except with an added rock ’n’ roll urgency. Perfect, transformative and powerful.
