Today, we pause to recognize Orphan Sunday, a day to remember the thousands of children across Maine and beyond who are growing up without the stability, love, and safety every child deserves.

There are too many children in need - each with their own story.
Some come from homes of neglect, others from abuse and some face challenges with special needs that our system has failed to support.

Our DHHS system is broken, and our most vulnerable are paying the price. That’s why I will bring accountability, compassion, and real reform to the way we care for Maine’s foster and orphaned youth.

Every child deserves a voice. Every child deserves a chance.
Let’s make sure they’re not forgotten today or any day.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Derek Levasseur Announces Independent Candidacy for Governor of Maine — Pledges to Lead with Truth, Transparency, and Compassion

Augusta, Maine – November 6, 2025 — Derek Levasseur, a Maine small-business leader, author, and advocate for government transparency, has officially announced his candidacy for Governor of Maine as an Independent in the 2026 election.

Levasseur’s platform, “Leadership You Can Talk To,” focuses on lowering the cost of living, eliminating property taxes on primary homes, reforming DHHS for accountability and child protection, ensuring government transparency, and uniting Maine across party lines.

In announcing his run, Levasseur also addressed past accusations that have circulated in the media:

"Like many Mainers, I’ve faced challenges that tested everything I believed in," Levasseur said. "I was accused of something I didn’t do, and I was found not guilty — but the experience forever changed me. It taught me humility, compassion, and the importance of fighting for truth, even when the odds are against you."

Levasseur said his journey inspired him to write Derecho: Scars on the Soul, a memoir about overcoming adversity, learning from hardship, and finding strength through faith and perseverance.

"I didn’t write the book to defend myself — I wrote it to help others who’ve faced similar battles," he said. "People go through hard times every day. What matters is what you do afterward — how you rise, rebuild, and help others do the same."

Levasseur’s campaign emphasizes that lived experience, not political pedigree, is what Maine needs most right now.

"I’m not a career politician," Levasseur continued. "I’ve lived through real struggles. I’ve built businesses, worked with families, and faced life’s hardest moments head-on. That’s why I’m running — because I understand what Mainers are going through, and I’m ready to fight for them."

His message of unity calls for Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to come together and focus on solutions rather than party lines.

"We don’t need more division. We need honesty, accountability, and compassion in government," he said. "This campaign isn’t about the past — it’s about building a future where truth and integrity guide every decision in Augusta."
