This week’s Waupaca proud guest is from the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization supporting the effort here in Waupaca County. We’d like to introduce Erin Kempfert.

Erin is a Minnesota native who has lived in Waupaca with her family since 2018. Originally from the Twin Cities, Erin joined Big Brothers Big Sisters in 2023, and enjoys working with the family and youth of Waupaca County to embody Big Brothers Big Sisters ideals of defending the power and promise of youth. When she’s not working, Erin enjoys film, theatre, and thrifting.

Floating on by

The lake is still with no breeze in the trees,
Its surface smooth and quiet as far as one sees.
The world above the water lies calm and free,
While under the surface drift diatoms we cannot see.

You can’t see a diatom with your naked eye,
No matter how much you try and try.
A drop of lake water on a microscope slide
Reveals their tiny forms and the secrets inside.

Along with the diatoms that thrive in the lake
Are fish for any crafty angler to take.
I see a canoe gliding softly by,
Two fishermen in it giving luck a try.

They pass as quiet as the still morning air—
No bites for them here, or maybe anywhere.
But just as they drift, a sly fish leaps high,
Snatching a fresh bug, not their little fly.

The ripples fade from the fish’s morning snack,
Leaving no trace when the fishermen circle back.
Just as the tiny diatoms thrive in the lake,
The fish wait below for the next angler at daybreak.

This weeks Waupaca proud guests are from the Waupaca Conference of St. Vincent de Paul.  The Waupaca Conference of St. Vincent de Paul is based out of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church and serves people in need in the Waupaca area with rent assistance, food and utilities, among other aid. They execute this via Home Visits in which a pair of volunteers "go out in twos" and meet with Neighbors in Need where they are and where they live. The Conference is part of the Appleton District. The
Waupaca St. Vincent de Paul does not have a Thrift Store. We help Neighbors in Need via local donations. The Appleton District runs two Thrift Stores.

The guests will be is Mary Ann Snyder and Jed DeYoung.
