Since the horrific slaughter of MN Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark and the shootings of MN Senator John Hoffman and his wife, I've had countless conversations, including with electeds, law enforcement, journalists in both MN and WI - and even a conversation with a connection to the family of the alleged shooter, who provided me with details on his background. It has been both disturbing and unsettling to think that another human being could get to a place in his head where he could do something like this. It simply doesn't make sense. There are many unanswered questions. And it's easy to wonder, who can we blame? I strongly believe in personal responsibility. Many are now posting conspiracies, vilifying the actions of the individuals in law enforcement, investigators, prosecutors, etc.

Ultimately, the alleged shooter committed these actions.

I don't know if it's because I'm a native Minnesotan, but I have faith that the combined efforts of local, state and federal law enforcement will conduct a thorough investigation to get all of the facts and ensure that justice is served. I believe that they are particularly committed to that in light of the fact that this perp has maligned law enforcement by impersonating them while committing these atrocious acts.

See below for a theory on a motive that seems plausible and appears to coincide with what a veteran MN law enforcement officer said to me.
