MORNING HEADLINES

The State of Ohio is reminding motorists of the direct connection between rising summer temperatures and an uptick in vehicle crashes. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day is often characterized by law enforcement across the country as the β€œ100 Deadliest Days of Summer” due to the increases in serious-injury and fatal crashes during the summer months. During this time period last year, a total of 67,847 crashes occurred on Ohio’s roadways and 384 people were killed, including 123 people who were not wearing a seatbelt, 104 people who had been riding a motorcycle, 37 pedestrians, and 28 teenagers. The increased risk of serious injury and fatal crashes during this time of year is attributed to several factors, including increased driving time, increased distractions, and driver inexperience.

Community Action Commission of Pike County Free Tax & Literacy Freedom Program has several tips to help you avoid higher energy costs due to the heat this summer. You can check out these simple, money-saving tips to keep your home cooler, reduce energy use, and stay comfortable all summer long, by using their "Beat the Heat" guide found on their Facebook post.

The Area Agency on Aging District 7 is currently seeking representatives to participate in and provide input regarding local services for older adults during AAA7 Advisory Council Meetings. The Advisory Council is the official advisory body of the AAA7, its Board of Trustees, and AAA7 staff. Representatives provide input at the meetings on the AAA7 Strategic Plan, provide feedback to improve local senior services, share community needs and concerns, and influence planning, priorities and initiatives. Upcoming meetings will be held in August and October. Meetings are held quarterly at the AAA7 Administrative Office in Jackson with a virtual option available. For more information, call 1-800-582-7277 or email [email protected].

Locally heavy rainfall will be possible again today, especially near and south of the Ohio River. More showers and storms with heavy rainfall may occur late tonight as well in parts of the Tri-State south and west of Cincinnati. Those who live near creeks and streams and any other flood prone areas should maintain a heightened awareness.

AFTERNOON HEADLINES

The Waverly City School supply lists for the upcoming 2026-27 academic year can be found on the district's page. The students' first day of school will be on Wednesday, August 19th. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review the lists carefully for the start of the new school year. It’s also important to note that some classrooms might have specific requirements, so be sure to check any additional notes provided by your child's teacher at a later time. The school will host an open house where families can visit classrooms, meet teachers, and ask any questions they might have about the school year ahead. That date will be announced later.

Next Generation MyCare is now here in the Area Agency on Aging District 7’s ten-county district. Next Generation MyCare is a health program for those who are dually-eligible, meaning they have both Medicaid and Medicare. This month, anyone who has manually selected a MyCare plan will transition to their new plan. For those who have not selected a plan, you will receive a letter from the Ohio Department of Medicaid that informs you of the plan you will be assigned to based off claim data info. Once you receive your letter, you will have two months after the month the letter is received to select a different plan. If you do nothing, you will roll over to the new plan on September 1st. Those who choose a plan manually will transition to the new plan the first of the next month. If you have any questions, please contact the AAA7 at 1-800-582-7277 or email [email protected].

Summertime in Ohio and surrounding states is perfect for enjoying the outdoorsβ€”but it can also bring extreme heat, power outages, and risks to vulnerable groups, including children, seniors, pets, and livestock. To help you stay safe, Ohio EMA is launching the Beat the Heat Ohio Summer Safety Series on social media. Each week will feature key safety and preparedness tips. Ways to remain safe on extreme heat days includes staying indoors if possible; stay hydrated; wear light-colored breathable clothing and avoid extreme outdoor activities during the hottest hours. You can monitor heat index and heat watches/warnings at the National Weather Service website: https://www.weather.gov/safety/heat?utm_content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=
