“I’m a doctor!”

The famous Star Trek actor ironically wanted to pursue a medical career, but his family wasn’t able to afford the expense. Instead, after joining the Army Air Corps in World War II, the Atlanta-born DeForest Kelley pursued a career in acting. In 1966, his wish of becoming a doctor was granted! ... sort of. Kelley landed the role of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in a little known sci-fi series called Star Trek. Today in 1920, Kelley was born in Atlanta, GA.

Today (January 12) in 1959, Berry Gordy, Jr. (techinally Berry Gordy III) founded one of the most dominant and influential record companies in American history, none other than Motown Records. You've undoubtedly heard the music of the likes of Marvin Gaye, the Jackson 5, and Stevie Wonder - but have you heard of the surprising link between Gordy and former President Jimmy Carter and the state of Georgia?

Both individuals' descendants grew up in rural Chattahoochee, Georgia. Through one James Thomas Gordy, Sr., the two are actually distant relatives. Although JTG Sr. married Harriet Helms, kickstarting the Carter legacy, it was Esther Johnson who bore Berry Gordy I in August of 1854 at a mere 14 years of age. Both Gordy and Carter are/were staunch advocates for the civil rights. Who could foresee that these two figures would one day be remembered as legendary in our time? Crank up some Motown tunes from its wide catalog of artists on this day of its founding.

Our lovely co-host, Connor Griffin, has lost someone extremely important to him and his family, Mr. Joseph Griffin.

As we are planning new episodes for the year, we wanted to share the heartbreaking news.

Our plan within the next few weeks is to post some recordings of Mr. Joseph Griffin discussing his military experience, along with another episode honoring his life story.

As a reminder, while you still have the older generations in your life, please record their legacy while you can. Spend time with your grandparents and love them! It makes all the difference in their world.

Rest in Heavenly Peace Mr. Griffin ❤️
