PEETIE WHEATSTRAW (1902-1941) aka "The Devil's Son-in-Law" and "The High Sheriff from Hell" recorded 161 sides from 1930 to 1941, and was one of the most popular recording artists, a big draw in and around his St. Louis home. This is likely his only known photo, playing a National Tricone. He was primarily a piano player and distinctive singer, with a beautiful sound, singing, "oooo, well, well" at the end of most phrases. Songs were sometimes the bragging kind, in the third person. "Women are ravin' about Peetie Wheatstraw in this land. Got all of these women runnin' from hand to hand." Love it!
