The #1 cause of success or failure in business (and in life) is mindset. Skipping mindset is a big mistake.
What does mindset have to do with success? Everything! If you don't make mindset your first thing to address each day before you work on stuff, you'll end up messing things up, making more mistakes more often, and generally frustrating yourself.
Our mindset is directly related to our emotional state, and when our emotional state is low vibe, meaning that we feel angry, frustrated, irritated, disappointed, bitter, etc., we make poor decisions.
On the other hand, when our emotional state is high, when we're feeling good, joyful, appreciative, and positively passionate, we make much better decisions.
Is there anything more important than making good decisions when you're self-employed? Not really!
That's why so many teachers urge people in business to make time to start each day with a strong, positive mindset. Meditation, journaling, affirmations, mirror work, exercise, and other good-feeling activities are important ways to get the day started.
I start my day with the following routine.
I begin with a 20 minute guided meditation to clear my mind of unwanted thoughts.
Then I spend a minute or two doing mirror work. Mirror work is where you look at yourself in the mirror and repeat affirmations while looking deeply into your own eyes. I usually start off by looking myself straight in the eyes and saying, "I love you!" It was very awkward and uncomfortable the first few times I did this, but these days I actually look forward to it because it gives me such a huge boost of self-confidence and self-love, which are essential for maintaining a pro-business mindset.
I follow this by finding three things to appreciate that day. It doesn't really matter what they are. What matters is spending enough time focusing on each one until I can feel it in my chest, in my heart area. Then I move on to the next affirmation.
I often follow up by taking a look at my vision board, again feeling each item and not just looking at it.
Then I set my intention for how I want the next hour or two of my day to go and what I want to have happen during that time.
Doing these things takes me a total of about 30 minutes each morning, but it's 30 minutes very well spent!
As the day goes on, I take a kind of "temperature check" of myself to see how I'm feeling. If I've had something happen to knock me down, I pause and repeat one or more of these mindset activities to reset myself back to a "higher vibe".
I also make it a point at some time during the day to go out onto the local bike path and take a walk for an hour or so, to further reinforce my mindset.
Trust me when I say that these daily activities really set me up for the day! They give me the powerful confidence I need to take the next steps in my business each day.
How is your mindset? Maybe it's time for you to install a daily practice!
