🎙️ On This Day: July 4, 1970 — The Countdown Begins!

“And now, on with the countdown...”

On this day in 1970, legendary DJ Casey Kasem took to the airwaves for the very first American Top 40 broadcast — and radio was never the same again.

With that unmistakable voice, heartfelt dedications, and stories behind the songs, Kasem didn’t just count down hits — he brought the Billboard Hot 100 to life. From #40 to #1, he guided us on a musical journey each week that blended pop culture, artist trivia, and emotional letters from listeners across the country.

The show aired coast-to-coast on July 4th weekend — fitting for a DJ who truly became a national treasure.

Casey hosted AT40 until 1988 when a contract dispute with ABC led to his departure and the arrival of Shadoe Stevens. But in 1998, the original voice of the countdown returned to the mic, picking up right where he left off, giving fans what they missed — and what they never stopped loving.

To this day, reruns of those classic Casey Kasem countdowns still hit the airwaves in syndication, transporting listeners back to the golden era of radio and reminding us why we fell in love with music in the first place.

Fun Fact: That very first #1 song on July 4, 1970?
“Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” by Three Dog Night.

And as Casey always said…
“Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars.”
