April 13, 1861 - After enduring nearly 36 hours of artillery bombardment the Federal garrison at Fort Sumter lowered the national colors and surrendered the fort to their Confederate attackers.

Among the defenders was a young Second Lieutenant, Norman Hall, of the regular army.

During the attack the flagstaff was struck and snapped in half. The colors fell to the ground.

Hall rushed into the open to retrieve the flag. With the help of others he was able to raise it once again until the fort’s surrender.

Seventeen months after Fort Sumter, Hall would lead the 7th Michigan Infantry Regiment for the first time as its Colonel.

Hall and the 7th Michigan would be among the Union regiments to enter the West Woods at Antietam.

September 1862

As the summer turns to fall, the desperate struggle to re-unite a nation reaches its darkest hour. The Army of Northern Virginia is less than twenty-five miles from the nation’s capital.

Within the capital city, President Abraham Lincoln, sits alone, dedicating himself and the country to staying the course, believing “that God wills this contest, and wills that it shall not end yet.”

Unknown to Lincoln, his words, foreshadowed events in the coming days and weeks that would change the course of the war and forever shape a nation.

And Here We Lie gives life to those historic events of September 1862, including the battles of South Mountain and Sharpsburg, and the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

OUR STORY:

In 1869, the West Branch Index, a small newspaper, was first printed by George Barrington in the small town of West Branch, Iowa.

Six years later, in 1875, L.W. Raber established a weekly newspaper, the West Branch Times.

Taking its name from the town’s two original publishers, Barrington & Raber Publishing Company will release their first publication in paperback and digital formats in 2026.
