TOMORROW’S TORNADO AREA 🌪️

This new SPC CIG scale is wild. Low probabilities, but for a strong tornado. Tomorrow’s evolution will partly depend on what happens with overnight storms, but as a cold front sags through the Great Lakes region, numerous storms will form.

Most should remain below severe limits, but shear will be quite strong, so any larger pockets of instability that develop in the wake of morning storms, could provide enough oomf to squeak out one or two tornadoes over this large area of storm coverage.

That’s just the way these types of setups work. Won’t be an outbreak, but we’ve got a chance over a sizable area, and there’s no other way to say it. I’ll see if we can better hone in on any area as it evolves. Might be western New York!

Before Storms Hit Tonight: Know Your Hail Sizes!

The atmosphere has warmed up and all that is stopping storms at this point is a capping inversion. A strong cold front will break that this evening across Northern Ohio. Peak timing for storms will be 6-9pm.

Storms with very large hail, for our area, are likely along either strong winds. Here is a sizing chart for reference. We are expecting 1”-2” hail in the strongest storms tonight.

Here We Go -- Severe Weather Threat Increasing, Ramps Up Tonight. ⛈️

Let's Talk:

Our latest risk for severe weather peaks tonight around 6-9pm but storms are possible 4-10pm in our area. This is at least the third wave of severe storms this month locally. It will be VERY warm this afternoon with highs in the 70s. The air will have a spring storm feeling to it.

Right now it looks like storms will develop on top of us or just to our north. They will quickly become organized and this means large hail and a few isolated tornadoes will be a real threat. As the storms gel into a more solid line the hail threat will remain but the tornado threat shifts to more of a straight line wind threat.

It's not typical that storms in this type of set-up develop right on top of us -- usually they do to the north or west and then blow in. I do think this gives us a higher risk for bigger hail than we typically see. Maybe larger than ping pong balls with the strongest storms.

Make sure to give family/friends a heads up on this one. I'll be posting updates throughout the day. Questions? Ask away.

5:45PM update: Severe T-Storm Watch Just Issued for Most of Ohio. ⚡️

It might be cool in Toledo and lakeshore areas but a MUCH warmer airmass across much of the state means strong t-storms are possible.

This watch goes through midnight. The best chances for these stronger storms with gusty winds will be the southern half of the state.

⚡️ Ohio Severe Risk Sunday Night ⚡️

Nighttime strong thunderstorms Sunday into Monday.

Following daytime wind gusts of 45-50mph as warm air surges back in, nighttime strong thunderstorms are possible. A squall line is expected to develop west across Illinois and Indiana Sunday night.

Timing: Storms are most likely 9pm-4am. This isn’t the most favorable for the worst severe weather, which will likely happen further west. But gusty winds and isolated tornadoes are possible.

Stay tuned for more info the next 24 hours ahead of these storms. I’ll post updates in the comments so be sure to follow or comment to get notified.
