Today in The Voice’s Facebook group, we’re releasing a guest article that never made it to the website before we paused publication. Even though we’re no longer running full-time, we’re still committed to sharing information that matters to West Chicago — and this one matters.
Last week, Mayor Bovey released a report detailing an alleged cover-up involving the former city administrator, a taxpayer-funded sexual harassment payout, and key information that was kept from both the public and the city council. This directly connects to the FOIA trail I began last spring, when crucial documents were missing — a red flag that suggested far more was happening behind closed doors during the previous administration.
Today’s article is about another issue I was investigating after a local ethics watchdog brought it to my attention. When I asked the former mayor, former corporate counsel, and former city administrator about it, I was ignored every time. The watchdog pressed forward, filed additional FOIAs, spoke with current officials, and his findings are what we’re publishing now.
What has surfaced so far — from the harassment settlement to repeated ethical concerns — paints a clear picture: certain officials appeared to believe the rules didn’t apply to them. Taxpayer-funded resources were treated as political props. And while some people say we should just “move forward,” ignoring wrongdoing only guarantees that the culture continues.
As a resident and as a journalist, I believe the public deserves the full truth — not the polished version, not the edited version, but the real one. Those in power should be held to a higher standard. My job is simply to put the facts on the table so the community can decide what comes next.

La semana pasada, el alcalde Bovey publicó un informe que describe un supuesto encubrimiento que involucra al exadministrador de la ciudad, un pago por acoso sexual financiado por los contribuyentes, y datos clave que se mantuvieron ocultos tanto al público como al concejo municipal. Esto se relaciona directamente con la serie de solicitudes FOIA que inicié la primavera pasada, cuando descubrí documentos cruciales que faltaban — una señal de alerta que sugería que mucho más estaba ocurriendo a puerta cerrada durante la administración anterior.
El artículo de hoy trata otro asunto que yo estaba investigando después de que un vigilante ético local me lo señalara. Cuando pregunté sobre esto al exalcalde, al exasesor jurídico municipal y al exadministrador de la ciudad, fui ignorada cada vez. El vigilante continuó, presentó FOIAs adicionales, habló con funcionarios actuales, y sus hallazgos son los que estamos publicando ahora.
Lo que ha salido a la luz hasta ahora — desde el acuerdo por acoso sexual hasta preocupaciones éticas repetidas — pinta un panorama claro: algunos funcionarios parecían creer que las reglas no se aplicaban a ellos. Los recursos pagados por los contribuyentes fueron tratados como herramientas políticas. Y aunque algunas personas dicen que deberíamos simplemente “seguir adelante”, ignorar la mala conducta solo garantiza que la cultura continúa.
Como residente y como periodista, creo que el público merece toda la verdad — no la versión adornada, no la versión editada, sino la real. Quienes están en el poder deben ser mantenidos a un estándar más alto. Mi trabajo es simplemente poner los hechos sobre la mesa para que la comunidad pueda decidir qué sigue.
