Michael Jordan has made history by becoming the first person to own and fully fund four completely free health clinics in North Carolina. Through a total contribution of $17 million to Novant Health, Jordan opened two clinics in Charlotte between 2019 and 2020 and more recently established two additional clinics in his hometown of Wilmington. These facilities, named the Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics, are designed to serve uninsured and underinsured individuals, offering free access to primary care, mental health services, and social support regardless of a patient’s financial status.
The clinics are approximately 7,300 square feet each, featuring 12 exam rooms, X-ray technology, behavioral health services, physical therapy, and even support for basic needs like food and housing. Since their opening, these clinics have had a significant impact: the first Charlotte location alone served more than 3,500 patients in its first year and became a major COVID-19 testing site during the pandemic. The Wilmington clinics are also filling critical healthcare gaps, with hundreds of patients reporting they had never before seen a primary care doctor.
Jordan has described the initiative as one of his most meaningful legacies, emphasizing that “money doesn’t matter when it comes to helping people.” He has personally attended the openings and spoken about the emotional impact of giving back to communities that shaped him. The clinics are part of his broader effort to ensure long-term access to quality healthcare in underserved areas—a cause he has supported passionately and with deep personal investment.‼️‼️‼️‼️
