"Hollywood Talks" With Director Patricia Riggen

Insight into the cinematic journey of a Latina director, Patricia Riggen ("Miracles From Heaven", "The 33" and "Under The Same Moon").

Patricia actually started her career winning a Student Academy Award for her short film "La Milpa".

She independently produced and directed the film "Under The Same Moon" (written by Ligiah Villalobos), a bonafide box office hit made for $1.7 million dollars grossing $23.3 million worldwide.

We talked about the breaking stereotypes, the gatekeepers and the patriarchy in Hollywood which makes it more difficult journey of being a women director -- more specifically a Latina director.

Patricia Riggen's remarkable career includes receiving a Student Academy Award for her short film La Milpa (The Cornfield) and earning the Jury Prize at Sundance for her documentary.

Her career includes the box office hits Bajo Las Misma Luna/Under The Same Moon and Miracles From Heaven. She directed The 33 shooting 30 Days Underground in the Mines. Our Hollywood Talks is about a beautiful journey of discovering her passion for directing and the struggle that women, Latina women still face in this industry. In spite of it all she has achieved the enviable career she always dreamt of.

The Mexican-American Cultural Education Foundation will honor Chicana playwright, screenwriter, and founder of the CASA 0101 theater, Josefina López at the 2024 Mexican American Film & Television Festival. Her work explores themes of identity, immigration, and the Latina experience. Her most acclaimed work, "Real Women Have Curves," portrays gender politics and struggles faced by Latina immigrants. López is a trailblazer in Chicano literature and cinema, with multiple awards, including the Humanitas Prize, to her name, and she advocates for social justice and representation.

"Moe," the Latino independently produced film, is a story that needed to be told. Hollywood Studios were not interested in funding a movie about Latinos with AIDS.

18 years in the making, the producers never doubted they would finish the film and it is as relevant and poignant as the topic was back when they started filming.

SCREENING at the Mexican-American Film & Television Festival on April 21, 2024:

A fun, moving, and insightful interview on Latin Heat's Hollywood Talks with the star and producer of the film, Sal Lopez.

"Moe," the Latino independently produced film, was a story that needed to be told. Hollywood Studios was not interested in funding a movie about Latinos and the AIDS epidemic, so it was up to Latino creatives from the Latino Theater Company to write it and produce it, and now it is available for your viewing pleasure.

Why did it take 18 years to finish the film? How did they finally find the money to finish it? Who wrote it? Who directed it? All this and much more on Hollywood Talks!
