June 8 is , and the answer to what we can do to do better by our local bodies of water may be lying right at our feet—read the fine print! If the drainage grate reads "DO NOT POLLUTE - DRAINS TO WATERWAYS," heed that message. On Fire Island, for visitors or residents, this may mean not pouring your beer or soda down that shoot. For bars and restaurants, this means they should be mindful of how they wash down their tables in the morning. Bleach or other cleaning solvents should never go down this drain! To do so is a crime against our waterways and a possible DEC violation. 💧
