GoldUnion had their grand opening today in WeHo’s Rainbow District. The global precious metals retailer specializing in the buying and selling of gold, silver and fine jewelry, has expanded into West Hollywood with a new location at 8615 Santa Monica Blvd., where a former Subway sandwich shop was located for several decades.

BREAKING!!!
After nearly a decade of cocktails, late nights and countless memories, Employees Only is closing its doors in West Hollywood.

The popular bar and restaurant at 7953 Santa Monica Blvd. announced that its final night will be Sunday, Sept. 27, marking the end of a nearly 10-year run in the city.

“After almost a decade in West Hollywood, Employees Only will be closing its doors on Sunday, September 27th,” the announcement read.

The team reflected on the people behind the scenes and the customers who filled the space over the years, saying: “We’re incredibly grateful for the people who worked alongside us, supported us, celebrated with us, and brought so much life and joy into this space. There are countless memories within these walls, and even more people we’re thankful to have shared them with.”

A reason for its closure is not yet known.

But the doors aren’t closing just yet.

“We still have a few weeks left, and we hope to spend them with the people who have been part of EO along the way,” the announcement said. “Join us for one last drink before we close our doors on September 27th.”

The time is Late 70s to early 1980s, and this here is Wayback WeHo to a gay bar called the Four Star Saloon, located in the heart of Boystown in an unincorporated area known as West Hollywood. We’re talkin’ way before the space became home to the iconic Micky’s WeHo we see today, at 8857 Santa Monica Blvd.

According to One National Gay & Le***an Archives at the USC Libraries, the Four Star Saloon (also known as The Four Star) was first documented in 1960 and last documented in 1986.

Micky’s WeHo original owner Michael Niemeyer remembers, ”It was one of the oldest continuously operating bars in LA county, having received the second or third liquor license issued after the end of prohibition. The name Four Star was in reference to the military during WW2. It was a roadhouse stop on the red line in the unincorporated area of West Hollywood at the time. We know it had a gay identity in the 1950s as it was a hangout for various closeted movie industry people like Montgomery Clift, Anthony Perkins and Dorthy Parker.”

Frame 8 was filmed inside the Four Star for the movie “The Morning After” starring Jane Fonda. Here she’s in a scene with Bruce Vilanch at around 1985 (the movie was released in ‘86).

Vilanch says he remembers it as a small neighborhood bar way before there was a Rainbow District, the Abbey WeHo and parking restrictions on Santa Monica Blvd.

And then this happened…
At roughly 6:30am Sunday morning, neighbors woke up to a BMW convertible completely engulfed in flames on N Fuller Ave near Fountain Ave. Firefighters were on the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known. No injuries were reported. This post will update when we learn more.
