David Hockney put AUTRE on the map when he accepted an invitation to be interviewed for the first issue, after sending a handwritten letter to his studio. It was nearly 10 years ago. He was almost 80 and had just completed almost 100 portraits of his friends and community for a major museum exhibition. Ci******es littered the floors. He expounded on the mystical qualities of Los Angeles, a place he often came after heartbreak or loss…this time it was the su***de of a young friend. He taught us lessons about art history, the Renaissance, perspective and the myth of his early party boy persona.

Duane Michals lived long enough to photograph everyone from artist René Magritte to actor Jacob Elordi. All with the same hyper lyrical style. His photographs entered the realm of poetry. Michals was interviewed for Autre’s SS25 “Desire” issue. He also created this highly personal photo story. He told Autre editor-in-chief Oliver Kupper, “Desire is best when it’s nuanced.”
