Gina and the Belafonte family would like to acknowledge the outpouring of support that we’ve received over the last few days. We appreciate your words of encouragement and love as we navigate these difficult times.

Over the coming days we will have more to share, but for now please support Sankofa.org as we work to continue the vision and legacy of our founder and father. If you are interested in making a charitable financial contribution, please go to our website.

For the first time, female filmmakers directed the majority of both the fest’s features and competition titles. But that’s not the only reasons why this year has felt so special.

Eos World Fund is sooooooo proud of Nina Menkes and her call to action embodied in the lucid, clarifying BRAINWASHED. The film’s descriptions and examples of Hollywood’s most famous & praised movies illuminates how women have been diminished and rendered powerless to the point of physical, social & mental harm by the most powerful film industry in the world.

See it and you will be charged up to change the way you point the camera and design your next scenes dear filmmakers.

Sundance: “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” builds on Mendes’ “cinematic experience” lecture to unearth some uncomfortable truths, even if many of them feel half-baked.

Directed by Nina Menkes

Featuring a new introduction by the filmmaker

One of American independent cinema’s most sui generis voices, Nina Menkes doesn’t so much direct films as, in her own words, “conjure” them. Imbued with a trancelike power, her cinematic spells combine surrealist imagery that has been compared to David Lynch’s with the hypnotic formal rigor of Chantal Akerman to create a wholly original film language, through which she explores themes of alienation, violence, sexuality, and the search for a nonpatriarchal spirituality. Featuring the recently restored 1990s landmark Queen of Diamonds—a glimmering hallucination set on the margins of Las Vegas—these selections from Menkes’s potent body of work reveal an uncompromising artist who gives radical form to the raw materials of her unconscious.

I’m part of a group of 30 DGA Directors who have formed a group called Best DirectHer. It is our mission to increase the number of women-directed films nominated for the DGA Awards in two categories:

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film
Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film

This year, we are focusing our efforts on the DGA Awards and will expand our scope to more categories and more awards in the years to come. Our goal is to inspire DGA members to remember and consider these outstanding women directed films.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

PLEASE SUPPORT US by using and by sharing our posts featuring female directed movies. The more support we get, the larger impact we will have in helping create inclusivity in the Entertainment industry. Thank you!

“Race scholars use the term white supremacy to describe a sociopolitical economic system of domination based on racial categories that benefits those defined and perceived as White. This system of structural power privileges, centralizes, and elevates White people as a group. If, for example, we look at the racial breakdown of the people who control our institutions, we see telling numbers.

These numbers are not describing minor organizations. Nor are these institutions special-interest groups. The groups listed above are the most powerful in the country. These numbers are not a matter of “good people” versus “bad people.” They represent power and control by a racial group that is in the position to disseminate and protect its own self-image, worldview, and interests across the entire society.

One of the most potent ways white supremacy is disseminated is through media representations, which have a profound impact on how we see the world. Those who write and direct films are our cultural narrators; the stories they tell shape our worldviews. Given that the majority of white people live in racial isolation from people of color (and black people in particular) and have very few authentic cross-racial relationships, white people are deeply influenced by the racial messages in films. Consider one statistic from the preceding list: of the hundred top-grossing films worldwide in 2016, ninety-five were directed by white Americans (ninety-nine of them by men). That is an incredibly homogenous group of directors. Because these men are most likely at the top of the social hierarchy in terms of race, class, and gender, they are the least likely to have a wide variety of authentic egalitarian cross-racial relationships. Yet they are in the position to represent the racial “other.” Their representations of the “other” are thereby extremely narrow and problematic, and yet they are reinforced over and over. Further, these biased representations have been disseminated worldwide; while white supremacy originated in the West, it circulates globally.”
