We would like to give a big welcome to Blake Hewitt! He was hired this evening as our new Athletic Director. Mr. Hewitt returns to his high school alma mater after graduating from and working for Michigan Tech, and working at St. Norbert College. Go Patriots!

Summer Workout Times for Student Athletes (Monday–Thursday)

5:45–6:45 AM – Open Workout

10:00–11:00 AM – Varsity Boys

11:00 AM–12:00 PM – JV/Freshman/Middle School Boys

12:00–1:00 PM – Girls

Athletes can attend whichever session(s) they are able to make. Consistency is more important than making a specific time every day.

Westwood Welding students Spencer Zorza and Michael Blanck recently completed a replica mining head frame structure. This structure is to serve as a memorial placed on the cap of the Barnes-Hecker mine shaft.

On November 3rd 1926, the Barnes-Hecker mine caved in resulting in what would be the worst mine disaster in Lake Superior iron district history. On that day, 51 men perished. Of those that perished, 41 were never recovered. This year marks the 100th anniversary of that disaster.

Ely Township, under the direction of Mr. Glenn Wing, is currently working on creating a beautiful new park at the mine site. Spencer and Michael also created a CNC plasma cut sign to commemorate the park.

Excellent work Michael and Spencer we are very proud of you both!

Summer Food Service Program Information

On the district website, www.nice.k12.mi.us, under the Parents tab, select Lunch Program then summer Food Service Program. Click on the Meet Up and Eat Up Site Locator Map of the USDA Meals For Kids Site Finder to find Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Summer meal sites near you.

The SFSP was established to ensure that low income children 18 and under continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. You can use the maps to find Summer Meal sites near you or to help someone find a Summer Meal site near them.

NICE is a public school district; the acronym "NICE" stands for National Mine, Ishpeming Township, Champion – Humboldt – Spurr Townships and Ely Township.

Our 6th graders had a great time and beautiful weather for their 6th grade trip to Mackinac Island this week. Their day was filled with biking, learning about the history of the island, sampling fudge, crossing the Mackinac bridge and much more. Thank you to Mrs. Verville for organizing this memorable trip and all those who volunteered their day to chaperone.
