The 50th Homecoming celebration of Westland Elementary was a success, said Crystal Whitehead, who organized the event.

“We had a great turnout,” she said. “I think it was beyond a lot of people's expectations. We had a lot of past and current teachers, alumni and a lot of the community.”

The Cultural Arts Society of West Jordan held their first annual Community Talent Showcase Fundraiser and Talent Show on Nov. 12. Their goal was to help promote the cultural life of West Jordan by promoting the arts in the community. West Jordan is excited to promote and sustain visual, performing and literary arts and bring a rich culture to the community.

In September, a group of Westvale teachers raised $500 to pay off lunch account balances. In November, Tua Kealoha, a local business owner and father of three, raised and donated $600 for past due lunch accounts.

In a sales tax revenue report to the city council in late August, Danyce Steck, Finance Director, relayed some tough news.

“While we saw 1% (May) or 5% (June) growth, we actually would consider that a decrease in sales tax because there was a 10% inflation factor,” Steck said.

The city has received more money from sales tax in the past few months than last year, but inflation is blasting a hole through the gains.

A few years ago the Utah State Legislature launched a pilot program for cities to test Ranked-Choice Voting. Every city is required to decide by April of every voting year whether they will use RCV.

In late August, the West Jordan City Council debated whether to use the new voting system in next year's election.

Preparations for the 2023 city elections have begun.

Team handball is a game that is a mixture of soccer and lacrosse. And, like the name states, it’s a team sport with two teams of seven players each (including the goalie) attempting to pass the ball using their hands and shoot it into the opposing team's net. The team that scores the most goals wins.

The Uintah Cup is scheduled for Sept. 24-25 at the Utah Soccer Arena, 1475 S. 700 West.

On Aug. 9, West Jordan City Council hosted theirs and listened to opinions from the public. The following day, the council confirmed a 5.6% property tax change.

On June 30, the Utah Farm Bureau Federation, the Salt Lake Chamber and the American Business Immigration Coalition held a press conference to bring awareness to a bill they are lobbying to pass in the Senate to help with the open jobs they struggle to fill.

The American Business Immigration Coalition partnered with the Salt Lake Chamber and Utah Farm Bureau Federation to educate the public about the need for immigration law changes to support local farming.
