How to Prepare for Your Zoom Lessons

In this video I will show you the steps you need to take to prepare for your voice lessons over Zoom.

STEPS FOR SUCCESS

Online singing lessons can be an amazing and convenient way to have a quality singing lesson. But there are some steps you wanna take to prepare so that you can get the most out of your singing lessons.

If you follow these steps before your first lesson, you will avoid unnecessary frustration and tech problems as you go into paid lesson time.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

While Zoom is my preferred platform for doing online singing lessons, there are two important parts to complete before having your first singing lesson: prepare your equipment setup, and adjust your sound settings.

Preparing for online lessons is pretty simple, but there are some essential pieces of equipment that you need for quality online lessons. There are also some things that can be very helpful as well. We will go over what you need to prepare for your lessons.

The other important thing to know about Zoom is how to adjust your sound settings. Most online communication platforms have noise suppression filters that can be helpful for most meetings and calls, but make singing and music lessons online terrible. Knowing how to adjust your sound settings, and turning on the original sound for EVERY LESSON is vitally important for quality lessons.

And finally, we will over over some additional tips to help you make the most out of your online singing lessons.

IN THIS VIDEO, YOU WILL LEARN:

- How to prepare your equipment setup with what you NEED, and some suggestions for what you may want as well.
- How to enable your settings to use the original sound for your online singing lessons on all devices.
- Once those settings have been turned on, you will learn how to turn on the original sound for EVERY LESSON!
- Some additional tips for getting the most out of your online singing lessons.

Hope you enjoy!

SINGING AND MUSIC ARE A TRUE JOURNEY

Singing and music are not about getting a specific goal or destination; those things are part of the journey. Art is always a quest of self-discovery and self-mastery. Keep your faith and continue to believe that great things are possible. Give yourself charity when things are hard and you fall short of what you're aspiring to become, pick yourself up and keep going, and find joy in the journey of singing and music!

SING ONE DAY AT A TIME

Everyday is different for your voice. Some days are better than others, and some days are amazing! If you pursue your goals one day at a time, wisely understanding how your voice is doing in that particular moment and then doing the best you can with what you've got, you will ALWAYS make progress towards your goals.

Wherever you are in your Singers Roadmap journey, keep making small consistent steps towards your goals. Hold yourself accountable to your goals and dreams. Small steps towards your goals add up over time, and create the habits you need to be successful. Keep going, you can do this!

GRATITUDE FUELS RESILIENCE

Find something is your life and your musical journey to be grateful for everyday. It's the little successes that add up over time, and create the big leaps of progress towards your goals.

Be grateful for your little successes, and you'll have moments of big success too!

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

* Keep your perspective, and remember that singing and music are a beautiful journey
* Give yourself charity and self-forgiveness when you fall short of your goals
* KEEP GOING!
* Find something to be grateful for in your singing and music journey everyday.

Let's support each other as we make this journey together! No one has to do this journey alone.

Step #7: Build Your Giving

BE GENEROUS WITH YOUR GIFTS, AND LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

Look for opportunities to share your gifts with others, and help others move forward with their gifts and goals as well. Genuine generosity brings out the best in all of us, and it is one of the best ways to connect with others and to draw others towards you.

WHAT YOU GIVE TO OTHERS TENDS TO COME BACK TO YOU

In my experience when you sincerely look for opportunities to serve others, and help them with their goals and dreams, unexpected doors of opportunity can open up for you.

It’s important to serve with an honest heart, and not because you’re trying to get something from someone, or get your foot in the door with a particular relationship or opportunity. Look for opportunities to serve without ulterior motives, and find the joy of helping others in their journey.

HELP OTHERS IN THEIR GOALS AND THEIR JOURNEY

People want to do business with people who they know, like and trust. This is also true with creative projects. People LOVE to be creative with other people they know, like and trust! Especially in creative spaces, people want to collaborate with people they feel safe with.

When people feel that you genuinely want them to be successful, just like you want to be successful in your own endeavors, they are more likely to open doors for you. Help them find solutions to their problems or obstacles, and it's amazing how you might start finding solutions to yours!

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

* Look for opportunities to share your gifts with others.
* Help others with their gifts and goals.
* Serve with an honest heart, without ulterior motives.
* People want to collaborate with others they know, like, trust and feel safe with.
* Be someone people can trust and feel safe with.

Step #6: Build Your Group

SING WITH OTHER SINGERS AND MUSICIANS TO BUILD YOUR COMMUNITY

One of the most powerful experiences of being a singer is singing with other people and musicians! Music is special because of the way it brings people together, and helps us to feel more connected to each other, and to ourselves. The connection that you can feel singing with others can be truly beautiful, spiritual and euphoric.

It’s also an important part of moving forward with your goals in music and singing. Music and singing are team sports, and whatever your singing and music goals happen to be, you will need great people to make music with. Whether it’s on stage or in the recording studio, finding the right fit for your music and artistry is literally a game changer in this musical sport.

JOIN A GROUP TO LEARN TO HARMONIZE WITH OTHERS

You need to learn how to harmonize and sing music within a group. It’s one of the most important skills you need to sing and make music with others. If you’ve never harmonized before, it can be a little challenging at first. And it’s very difficult to learn by yourself because you don’t have somebody in the room to harmonize with.

My best suggestion is to find a way to sing with others in a group where there is harmony.

If you love musical theater, audition for a show so you can get experience singing and harmonizing with the cast. Join a local church or school choir, and preferably choose to be in parts that tend to sing the harmony parts more (the alto, tenor, & bass parts). Or join a band where you can pick up harmonies singing background vocals and duets.

Music and singing are always at their best when they're shared with others.

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

* If you're in musical theater, audition for a show to sing with a cast.
* Join your local school or church choir.
* Join a band to learn how to sing background vocals.
* Sing a duet with a friend who can harmonize.

Step #5: Build Your Skills

BUILD ANY OTHER SKILL SETS YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

Just like learning to sing and perform in front of people is its own skill set, there are other skills that might useful to learn that will help you on your singing journey.

Figure out what other skills you need to learn to move forward with your goals, and start working on them!

IF YOU WANT TO DO MUSICAL THEATER...

For example, if you want to perform musical theater you need to do more then sing well. You also need to act well, and dance with some proficiency. See if you can find an acting class or an acting coach to help you figure out your castability because of your look, voice, and energy. They can also help you find good monologues.

Also, take some dance classes to improve your dance technique and help you to pick choreography faster. This will also help your ability to sing after intense dance movement which can leave you out of breath.

IF YOU WANT TO BE AN ARTIST...

If you want to become a recording artist, you need to be able to write original songs and collaborate with other artists, writers, musicians and producers. You need to start learning how to write songs, and you may even want to pick up basics on an instrument like guitar or piano and learn some basic music theory and chords. Studying the course Music Theory for Songwriters: The Fundamentals on LinkedIn Learning is a great place to start!

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

* Figure out your ultimate goal!
* If you're in musical theater, make sure your studying singing, and also studying acting and dance.
* If you're an artist, figure what your next step needs to be to create original music, like finding a cowriter, finding a music producer, going to open mics or attending NSAI .
* Take guitar, piano or sightsinging lessons.
* In today’s day and age, it’s helpful for everyone to pick up some basic video and music recording skills. LinkedIn Learning has some great courses.

Step #4: Build Your Performance

BUILD YOUR PERFORMANCE SKILLS

Now that you know a handful of songs and you have some reasonable control of your voice, it’s time to start getting used to performing in front of people. It’s one thing to sing in a private lesson, and it’s another thing to do sing in front of a group of people. You have to get used to dealing with your nerves!

EXPERIENCE BUILDS CONFIDENCE OVER TIME

Just like learning to drive a car, you need to get experience. The more experience you get in front of a crowd, the more comfortable you’ll get singing in front of people. Not because your nerves go away, but because you learn how to deal with your nerves, and even harness your nerves for a better performance!

START SMALL BY YOURSELF, AND THEN IN FRONT OF PEOPLE

Start small by singing in front of a mirror, or recording yourself with a smart phone or camera. NOBODY like to watch themselves or listen to themselves, but it's a crucial step to seeing what you look like and what you sound like, and adjusting your performance.

LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO PERFORM WITH OTHER PEOPLE

Singing with a group of people can help take some of the pressure off! Join a local choir or audition for a musical where you can sing with like-minded people.
It's also a great idea to start looking for musicians who can accompany you while you sing, like a guitarist or pianist. It's helps to have a great teammate to share the stage with you!

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

* Start small by singing in front of a mirror, or start recording yourself with a smart phone or camera.
* Look for low-risk opportunities to get experience singing in front of people.
* Start looking for fellow singers or musicians that you can perform with. Music is always better together with great people!
* Everyone has to start somewhere, and nobody is fantastic when they're just starting out.
* BE VERY KIND TO YOURSELF!

02/04/2025

Step #3: Build Your Songs

BUILD A LIST OF SONGS THAT YOU CAN SING

As you continue to build your vocal control, you're going to start building your list of songs that you can sing well. Start with songs that you enjoy that match your vocal abilities, and look for songs that will reasonably challenge your vocal abilities as well.

CONTINUE TO LEARN NEW SONGS TO ADD TO YOUR LIST

A good vocal coach can help you find songs that are good for your voice, and songs that will challenge your abilities so that you continue to grow. Make sure your setlist is a balance of upbeat, mid-tempo, and ballads for variety.

GOALS FOR BUILDING YOUR SONG REPERTOIRE:

1. 30 Minutes of Songs
2. 60 Minutes of Songs
3. 90 Minutes of Songs
4. 120 Minutes of Songs
5. 180+ Minutes of Songs, or more

FIND VERSIONS OF YOUR SONGS THAT YOU CAN PERFORM

Memorize your songs, and find versions of the songs to sing along with without the original singer on the track, such as karaoke versions.
My favorite place to look for quality karaoke tracks is a website called Karaoke Version. The tracks are studio quality, and customizable for a very inexpensive price. You can also look for tracks in places like the iTunes online store, or YouTube.

If you just can't find the right karaoke track for a song you want to sing and perform, you can try to create one, for FREE!
Using a website called Vocal Remover, you can try to strip the vocals away from the original track to create an instrumental version. I can't guarantee it will always work to create a quality track to sing with, but it's worth a try!

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

* Make sure your setlist is a balance of upbeat, mid-tempo, and ballads for variety.
* Learn and memorize your songs!
* When songs are ready to perform, find the karaoke tracks, chord charts, or sheet music that you need for your setlist.
* Make a playlist of your setlist on your favorite music app. You want this list to be karaokes loaded onto your phone, ready to sing and perform at a moment's notice.

Step #2: Build Your Ear

BUILD YOUR MUSICAL EAR AND YOUR MUSICAL SKILLS
As you practice your vocal scales you need to improve your musical ear by building your ability to sing with different colors or tones to your voice, sing with different levels of dynamics, sustain notes for longer periods of time, build your ability to use vibrato, and build your vocal agility with licks and runs.

You also need to improve your technical ear. This includes your ability to match pitches with proper intonation and control, and to hear and sing different note intervals and rhythms.

CONTINUE YOUR VOCAL WORKOUTS, AND YOUR LESSONS
Continue your singing lessons so you can continue building your vocal abilities. It takes time and consistent practice to build these coordinations into your muscle memory and your control. Consistent voice lessons and persistent practicing will help you accomplish this.

Use my FREE Practice Log to track your practicing, and keep yourself accountable to your goals!

LEARN YOUR NOTES AND INTERVALS
If you don't have some basic understanding of notes and intervals, I've got a great resource that you can access for FREE, with my help!

Watch Music Theory for Songwriters: The Fundamentals on the learning platform LinkedIn Learning.

QUIZ YOURSELF ON MUSIC THEORY AND NOTES
There are also great resources for free or inexpensive to help you sharpen your theory skills, and develop your ear. There is an abundance of free training videos on platforms like YouTube, and other courses like LinkedIn Learning.

Start quizzing yourself on music theory, notes and intervals with great free websites like musictheory.net or apps like Tenuto.

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

- Continue doing your vocal workouts daily, and build your vocal athleticism and musicality.
- If you need some help learning about music notation and intervals, watch Music Theory for Songwriters: The Fundamentals on LinkedIn Learning.
- Start quizzing your yourself and your ear by drilling note intervals and rhythms with musictheory.net or apps like Tenuto.

Step #1: Build Your Voice

BUILD STRENGTH, CONTROL AND BEAUTY IN YOUR VOICE BY PRACTICING DAILY
Your first goal is start working out your voice regularly. Singing is a sport, and you have to build your ability to control your voice properly. You do this by practicing your vocal scales everyday.

Start practicing your vocal scales at least 10-15 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week. Working out your voice daily will improve your control, your pitch accuracy, your vocal endurance, your tone, your range, and your ability to sing through the vocal transitions of your voice.

Establishing a frequent pattern of practicing is KEY to success in all of the steps!

BUILD YOUR VOCAL WORKOUT INTO YOUR LIFESTYLE
“You do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.”

- James Clear, Author of "Atomic Habits"

Figure out a system that works for you! You take vocals for a reason, and one important reason is to record your lesson so you have a vocal workout to practice! Practice to your lesson recording!

And once you've completed your vocal workout, celebrate your small wins in a meaningful way to you. It's the small habits that lead to profound changes!

TARGET GOALS:

- For MINIMUM results: Aim to practice 5-15 minutes of scales a day, 5-6 days a week

- For MODERATE results: Aim to practice 10-20 minutes of scales a day, 10-20 minutes of songs a day, 5-6 days a week

- For ADVANCED results: Aim to practice 10-20 minutes of scales a day, 30+ minutes of songs a day, 5-6 days a week

ACTIONS STEPS - TIPS AND HACKS

- Practice your vocal workout in the shower.
- Practice your vocal workout driving to and from school or work.
- Load your most recent vocal workout recording on a playlist on your phone so you always have it with you to practice.
- Set a daily alarm on your phone or watch and when it goes off, stop whatever you're doing and practice your scales, NO MATTER WHAT!
