Douglas Tompkins, founder of The North Face and co-founder of Esprit, transitioned from a successful businessman to a passionate conservationist.

In the 1990s, after selling his stake in Esprit, Tompkins and his wife, Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, began purchasing vast tracts of land in Chile and Argentina, amassing over 2 million acres.

Their goal was to protect pristine wilderness from development, focusing on preserving biodiversity and creating national parks.

Through their organization, Tompkins Conservation, they established Pumalín Park, a 994,000-acre nature sanctuary, and Patagonia Park, among others, while restoring ecosystems and reintroducing native species.

Facing initial suspicion from locals and accusations of land grabbing, their persistence won public support, particularly against projects like damming Patagonia’s rivers.

In 2018, Kristine donated 1 million acres to Chile, contributing to a 10-million-acre national park network, the largest private land donation in history.

This effort, equivalent to three times the size of Yosemite and Yellowstone combined, has boosted ecotourism and protected critical habitats.

Tompkins’ legacy, continued by Kristine after his 2015 death, demonstrates how private wealth can drive large-scale conservation, inspiring global efforts to preserve natural landscapes.
